The Langevin (or von-Mises) distribution L(μ,k,q) of a unit vector in Rq has been well studied for the cases of large samples (n? 8) and high concentrations (K? 8). Here we study it as q? 8. Interesting results are only obtained when we use L(μ,q½,q).

The need for computing P-values for the Kuiper statistic has been emphasised by Batschelet (1981). Some exact P-values, with useful interpretations for making inference about a probability model for circular data, are provided. Computation of the exact values are based on Durbin (1973) boundary crossing probabilities. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the usefulness of the results.

Various types of residual are proposed for use with directional data. Asymptotic distributions are given for large sample sizes and for concentrated error distributions. A form of residual plot is suggested and is illustrated with some practical examples.

We develop theorems that are analogous to the famous theorems of Lindley & Smith (1972) for the case that the data are from the p-variate von Mises-Fisher distribution. Results similar to those of Lindley & Smith are obtained for the two-stage case. There is, however, a departure from normal theory in the three-stage case, since closed form solutions do not exist when sampling Sfom the von Mises-Fisher distribution. The difference is discussed and elaborated.

The anniversary model for the annual repetition of parasuicide (attempted suicide) is described. In order to demonstrate the existence of such effects in individuals, the Range Test for circular data is applied to data collected over a 2-year period from a specific case from the Edinburgh Regional Poisoning Treatment Centre. The use of this model in predicting future clusters of parasuicide episodes is then discussed.

The addresses of marriage partners just before their marriage were extracted from the marriage entries of a representative sample of marriages solemnised in England and Wales during 1979. The relative orientation of each marriage was calculated, and for marriages which ranged over 10 kilometres, the angles were found to follow a von Mises distribution with a ‘Preferred direction’ along an axis which was approximately North West/South East. Further investigation, using a combinatorial method, strongly suggests that the phenomenon is largely due to the geographical distribution of persons eligible to marry.

The new approach to the analysis of variance type technique for the angular data suggested by Harrison, Kanji & Gadsden (1986) has been extended for the analysis of larger designs. Examples are given to indicate the validity of the new approach.

Certain spatial point patterns may be associated with a single fixed point. Some simple tests for spatial trend in radial and angular distribution are recommended when no interaction between the radial and angular distribution is found. Interaction tests for more complex rate finctions are discussed and a practical example of the analysis applied to the mortality experience around a steel plant is provided.
