Estimation of the parameters of a non-linear model is considered when both measured variables have random errors. The maximum likelihood estimates with the asymptotic variance and covariance matrix are presented. Real data are used to illustrate the procedure discussed.

This Paper examines the file-merging technique of statistical matching. Details are given of both its practical application and its numerical accuracy. In particular, it is shown that the ability of statistical matching to recreate correlations between variables existing only in different files is dependent on some respective assumptions which are unlikely to be satisfied in practice. These theoretical properties are illustrated by results from a simulated match where the estimates of correlations, as well as other measures of association, are found to be grossly inaccurate.

A family of log-linear models are proposed to describe contingency tables in which one variable can be considered as the response to the remaining. The proposed models take into account the ordering nature of the response categories and have structure similar to that employed in polynomial regression. Stochastic ordering of the response distributions under the proposed models is discussed and the model-reduction techniques are developed. The proposed models are applied to two data sets previously analysed in the literature.

The effect of the inspector's accuracy on types I and II errors on Dependent and Deferred double sampling plans by Baker et al. (1978) and Chain-deferred inspection plans by Osanaiye (1983) which utilise the surrounding lot information on sentencing a lot is examined. The proportion of production that is wrongly accepted or rejected by each of the plans are also examined drawing particular attention to the effect of making resorts. A linear trend in process quality is assumed. The Chain-deferred plan in general has more tendency to reject defective items more than any of the other plans irrespective of the magnitude of the inspector's error. Although it has slightly higher tendency to reject good items, this is not very significant compared with the other plan as can be seen in the results.

A new ratio is described and evaluated, and the validity of Normal approximations (for this and the original ratio) are examined. The standard technique for estimating the variance of a linear regression coefficient is unbiased when the random errors of the observational units are independent and identically distributed. When the unit variances are not all equal, however, as is often the case in practice, this method can be biased. An unbiased variance estimator given uncorrelated, but not necessarily homoscedastic, unit errors is introduced here and compared to the conventional technique using real data.

Negative binomial and Poisson distributions are fitted to data on scores in Association Football for the seasons 1946–47 to 1983–84. There are strong grounds for preferring the negative binomial up to 1970; thereafter the Poisson seems adequate. Simplification is achieved by fitting the negative binomial with a common parameter. The analyses are set in the context of previous applications and interpretations in the area. Different models giving rise to the negative binomial or Poisson are investigated and some support found for models not previously advanced in this context. Notwith-standing the success of such exercises some scepticism is expressed about the interpretations placed on previous analyses.

The problem of ‘atypical data point’ in the estimation of model parameters and its effect on prediction are discussed. A cross-validity procedure is then proposed to accommodate the unusual observations in the estimation and thereby to improve the prediction of future data points. Each atypical point, weighted according to cross-validitory procedure, is used in the estimation of model parameters.
