The structure of a novel antimicrobial substance (1) isolated from a strain of the bacterium,Vibriosp., was determined to be 7,7-bis(3-indolyl)-p-cresol on the basis of spectroscopic data. The substance showed specific inhibition againstBacillus subtiliswith a minimum inhibitory concentration of 70 μg/ml but did not affect the growth of other test microorganisms.

A synthesis ofcis-1-(5-acetoxy-3,6-dimethyl-1-indanyl)-2-methyl-1-propene was accomplished starting from 3,6-dimethyl-1-indanone. The spectral data differ significantly from those reported for mutisianthol, particularly in the presence of a high-field signal in the NMR spectrum of the final product and various intermediates, consistent withcis-1,3-dialkylindanes. This discrepancy together with similarities in other parts of the spectra suggest a revision of the structure of mutisianthol to thetransisomer. A similar revision for jungianol is also indicated.
