The cytotoxic sesquiterpene illudin S was isolated from the fruiting body of the fungusOmphalotus illudens. From the fermentation broth ofOmphalotus olearis, ATCC-11719, both illudin S and illudin M were isolated. Normal and reverse phase HPLC analytical methods for the title compounds were developed.

A new flavonol glycoside, quercetin 3 - glucosyl (1′″ - 4″) rhamnoside - 7 -rhamnosyl (1′″ - 6″″) glucoside (1) together with known flavonol glycosides, quercetin 3 -rhamnoside (2), quercetin 3 - glucoside (3) and myricetin 3 - galactoside (4) have been isolated from methanolic extract ofMyrsine africanaleaves and identified on the basis of their spectral data.

Chemical examination of the ethyl acetate extract of the soft coral Sinularia flexibilis collected from the Diglipur Island of Andaman & Nicobar group of Islands of the Indian Ocean furnished the first trihydroxycembranolide six membered lactones, flexibilolide and dihydroflexibilolide. Their structures have been established by a study of their spectral [UV, IR,1H &13C NMR, 2D NMR (1H-1H &1H-13C COSY & NOESY) and Mass] data.

5,6-Dihydroxyindole (1a) was isolated by bioactivity-directed fractionation from fresh leaves ofRhaphidophora korthalsii. The unstable compound and its stable diacetate (1b) were characterized spectroscopically and confirmed by synthesis. The ED50of 1a against P388 cells was 3.5 μg/ml.

Syringic acid reacted in a reaction system containing hydrogen peroxide and peroxidase to give 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone. The reaction product was identified using different spectroscopic techniques and by HPLC. This reaction might have biological importance as the natural synthesis pathway of 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone has not been discovered up to now.
