A new regioselective and diastereoselective approach to the one-step synthesis of steroid skeleton based on high pressure Diels-Alder reaction of 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one is described. Structure analysis of the reaction products by NMR spectroscopy is presented.

Pholiotic acid (1), a novel illudalane sesquiterpene, 3,5-dichloro-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (2), and 3,5-dichloro-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol (3) were isolated from the BasidiomycetePholiota destruens. The compounds exhibit weak antifungal and cytostatic activities.

Organic extracts of the spongeSarcotragussp. yielded three prenylated hydroquinones, two of which [1,2] were moderately cytotoxic in the NCIin vitroantitumor screen. The third compound [3] was less cytotoxic, but inhibited HIV-1 and HIV-2 reverse transcriptasein vitro.

The cardinalins, a series of pyranonaphthoquinone dehydrodimers and their hydroquinone precursors, are isolated from the New Zealand toadstoolDermocybe cardinalisand their structures and relative stereochemistries are deduced from the spectroscopic data. The cardinalins are the first pyranonaphthoquinones to be found in the Higher Fungi.
