摘要:
In plantations currently increasing by 1,700 acres a year in the Southern Highlands Province of Tanganyika, a number of diseases have recently become important in the present total of 5,000 acres of pine. Die-back induced by boron deficiency is the most important and is the subject of a comprehensive research programme which has so far shown that the condition can be alleviated but not cured by a ground dressing or foliar spray containing borax. Severe yellowing in the biggest planting scheme may be caused by a major nutrient deficiency, but experimental evidence is not yet available. Dead top similar to that reported from Kenya has been recorded but it and other presumed deficiency diseases are of secondary importance.PestalotiopsisandDiplodiafungi have been found associated with heavy needle-cast and may be its primary cause.Armillariais at present of secondary importance. Lepidoptera and thrips have damaged pines in several areas. The biggest volume-producer,P. radiala, is by far the most severely affected by disease, but other pines (e.g.P. palula, higher and moister sites;P. elliottii, lower and drier) have so far been relatively free from disease.

摘要:
A short resume is given of the history of forest entomology in East Africa. During the period 1957–61 the Forest Insect Survey progressed at a reduced rate due firstly to the hiatus after J. C. M. Gardner's retirement, and secondly to its subsequent eclipse by specific investigations. It is now entering a phase of considerable expansion. Provision has been made for an increased flow of material. Improved facilities for this division's capacity as an inter-territorial centre for the circulation of information and insect material have been planned.

摘要:
The difficulty in defining the factors controlling termite attack on living trees is explained. Until the full picture is known, accurate prediction of expected reaction in an area cannot be made, nor can one be sure of the most efficient control methods.

摘要:
In common with other parts of Africa, Uganda has found that termites are the main obstacle to the successful establishment of Eucalyptus plantations in the drier areas. This paper outlines the problem as it affects Uganda, examines the factors affecting the incidence of attack, and gives an account of the research into termite control, both chemical and silvicultural, which has been carried out. The lack of knowledge regarding the basic factors underlying termite attack is stressed and proposals made for future lines of research.

摘要:
The Cerambycid borer,Oemida gahaniDist. attacks livingCupressusandJuniperus proceraplantation trees in Kenya Highland forests, where it is indigenous in the natural forest. It is considered to be the most important forest pest at present in Kenya. An account of recent research on the biology of the pest is given, with particular reference to the relative susceptibility of indigenous host species. The effect of this on the incidence of the pest in different areas and especially in cypress plantations, is discussed. Information on the degree of attack of plantations and resultant damage and degrade to the timber, is followed by an account of control measures and recommendations for the treatment of timber for external use and for export.

摘要:
Ioberlinia scheffleriHarms is a common tree in the East Usambara Mountains of Tanganyika, andParinari excelsasubsp.holstiiis the dominant tree of the Kalinzu Forest and adjacent areas of Uganda. The utilization of these two species, however, is severely curtailed by borer damage. The infestations to which the living trees are subject, results in serious losses in volume on conversion and frequently renders trees unacceptable for milling. In certain areas of the Usambaras 87 per cent of all commercial sizeIsoberliniatrees are borer-infested. In parts of the Kalinzu concessions 98 per cent of exploitableParinaritrees are attacked.

摘要:
The tropical waters on the East African Coast present conditions very favourable to marine borer attack of timber. A description of these conditions and of the species responsible for damage is given.
