摘要:
The geographical position of the relevant production and protection forest reserves, in the Western Province of Uganda, in relation to the National Parks and Game Reserves, is defined. The game animals, which are particularly damaging to Uganda forests, are noted; the problems arising from such damage, and game-forest requirements, are discussed. Particular attention is drawn to Uganda's estimated future timber needs, and the value of game as a commercial crop. Solutions to the conflicting problems which result from the clash of game and forestry are suggested. The evolution and implemen-tation of a possible combined Forestry/Game Policy is indicated.

摘要:
Brief details are given of the animals concerned, the ways in which they injure the forest and present methods of control. Ways in which big game benefit the forest are also considered. The only serious threat to the objects of Forest Policy is damage to forest produce and suggestions are made for the reduction of this injury whilst still retaining the beneficial effects of game in forests. Big game should be regarded not as a liability but as an additional forest resource in accordance with the concept of multiple land use.

摘要:
The forest areas primarily concerned are the forest reserves of Tanganyika. Game animals have inhabited these forest areas, and other wilderness areas of the territory, for many thousands of years. Relatively recently the adoption of settled forms of land use has caused a big reduction in the extent of wilderness, and a corresponding rise in the importance, as holding grounds for game, of the forest areas. Some forest reserves have been also game reserves since their original establishment. This dual use has been largely successful but has also created problems which will tend to become more severe. Study of the questions involved is in its early stages. The matter is, however, not simply one of concern for game and forestry. Owners of domestic stock wish their animals to use forest grazing in competition with and as an alternative to game. The purpose of this paper is to determine how far the welcome granted by forestry to the wild fauna needs to be qualified in the interest of the territory as a whole.

摘要:
The case for the retention of uneconomic forests against other land use pressures has often been based. in East Africa. on the beneficial influences of forests on the hydrological regime. A brief review is given of the influences of forests on climate, soil moisture and streamflow, presented in the light of results from catchment area experiments in East Africa. Stress is laid on the conditions when the above case is likely to be valid and of more than marginal significance. In East Africa, where surface storage opportunities are small, rational catchment management must aim at maintaining the maximum infiltration rate, but the transpiration loss by tropical evergreen forest is likely to be high and any hydrological arguments for forests in regions with an annual rainfall of less than 50 in. must be reviewed very carefully. Finally, an outline of suitable land uses in varying circumstances is tentatively presented for general guidance in the absence of more detailed information.

摘要:
This paper relates the catchment area research methods used in East Africa to those used elsewhere. Routine hydrological measurements have directed attention to the need for understanding the mechanisms of stream production. The classical method has sought to determine statistical relations between streamflow parameters and rainfall before and after the land use change in a catchment, without measuring the numerous factors responsible for the variability of the data. Such calibration periods may last at least 10 years. Under the conditions of rapid changes in land use in East Africa, reliable preliminary results must be achieved quickly and the urgency calls for very intensive methods that aim at a more complete description of the total hydrological cycle in small catchments. Because of the exceptionally favourable climatic and soil con-ditions in high altitude catchments in East Africa, worthwhile results have been obtainable in as little as three years and the main conclusions are summarized.
