SummaryThe aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between theDirofilia immitisantigen and morphology response of pulmonary tissue. The pulmonary arteries ofD. immitisnaive dogs were infused with an antigenic extract of adult femaleD. immitisworms. Light and electron microscopy and an assessment of vascular permeability were performed to compare arterial pathology 1 h and 5 days after antigen infusion. SummaryMammary gland vaccination for the protection of calves against salmonella infection 1. Quantitation of specific Ig‐classes in the cow, colostrum and calf in relation to clinical and bacteriological findings after challenge infectionPregnant cows were vaccinated at ablactation by infusion of heat inactivatedS. dublinorS. typhimuriuminto the mammary gland in order to protect their offsprings via colostrum against salmonellosis. This method of vaccination is based upon statements according to which specific IgA and IgM play a prominent role in respect of protection. Both Ig classes are produced locally and are not channelled from the mother's system into the mammary gland.In comparison to calves from non‐vaccinated control animals, calves from vaccinated cows did not exhibit clinical symptoms after challenge infection, and had a reduced salmonella excretion rate in respect of quantity but not in respect of the duration of shedding salmonella. Serological quantitation of specific Ig‐classes (DIG‐ELISA) did not allow to identify a specific Ig‐class responsible for protection.ZusammenfassungTragende Kühe wurden zum Zeitpunkt des Trockenstellens durch Infusion von hitze‐inaktiviertenS. dublinbzw.S. typhi‐muriumüber den Strichkanal in das Euter immunisiert in der Absicht, deren Kälbern einen passiven Schutz gegenüber Salmonellose zu vermitteln. Dieses Verfahren basiert auf Angaben, wonach schützende Ig‐Klassen vom IgA‐ und IgM‐Typ lokal gebildet und nicht aus dem mütterlichen System in die Milchdrüse eingeschleust werden.Gegenüber Kontrollkälbern von nicht‐vakzinierten Kühen bewirkte diese Maßnahme bei Kälbern von immunisierten Kühen nach der Prüfinfektion die Abwesenheit klinischer Erscheinungen und eine quantitativ aber nicht zeitlich reduzierte Ausscheidungsrate von Salmonellen. SummaryA progenital disease encountered at one equine stud farm at Bangalore in Southern India during 1987 was investigated and confirmed as equine coital exanthema on the basis of characteristic lesions and clinical symptoms, isolation of equine herpes virus‐3 (EHV‐3) from the scabs collected from animals having active lesions and demonstration of neutralizing antibodies in the sera of recovered mares and stallion. This is the first authenticated report of the occurrence of equine coital exanthema in India due to EHV‐3.ZusammenfassungDas Auftreten des Koitalexanthems in einem Pferdezuchtbetrieb in Bangalore (Süd‐Indien) 1987 wurde untersucht.
