New data are presented for the analysis of the elements: REE, Na20, Fe2O3, Cr, Co, Rb, Cs, Ba, Hf, Ta, Th and Il in twenty‐five less well known carbonate and industrial geological reference materials by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The materials include NBS 1c, 15e, 88a and 120b from the National Bureau of Standards, Washington DC; GFS 400‐403, 405, 407, 411, 412, 415 and 417 carbonate materials from George Fredrick Smith, Columbus, Ohio and BCS 267, 269, 309, 315, 319, 367, 368, 375, 376, 381 and 382/1 from the Bureau of Analysed Samples, Middles‐borough, Cleveland, UK. A simultaneous multi‐element method is described for the determination of six elements of importance in geochemical investigations of mineralization processes in granites. After a mixed acid sample digestion, the elements Be, Li, Nb, W, Mo and Sn are determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. Possible sources of bias due to incomplete sample dissolution and from spectral interferences were investigated. Fluorine content has been determined non destructively in eighty international geochemical reference samples (GRS) including rocks, soils, sediments, minerals and ores, by proton induced gamma ray emission spectrometry (PIGE) using the nuclear reaction19F(p,αγ)16O. Under our operating conditions, the detection limit is around 25 ppm. Our analytical results are compared with the presently preferred values when available or with other published data. Data on three Japanese geochemical reference samples (JR‐1, JA‐1, and JB‐2) are presented. Ten major and thirty‐five trace element concentrations were determined using x‐ray fluorescence, instrumental thermal neutron activation, thermal neutron capture prompt gamma‐ray spectrometry, delayed neutron assay, automated thermal neutron activation analysis, inductively coupled plasma emission, atomic absorption, and ion selective electrode. New mean values for up to 11 major and minor and up to 11 trace elements in soils SO‐1 to SO4 have been calculated by two procedures. Analytical results received by CCRMP subsequent to the certification program of 1979 were included. In one instance, the same procedure as used for certification wherein all results except those rejected on chemical and/or statistical considerations was followed, but little improvement over the 1979 calculations was obtained. The other procedure is proposed by the authors for use in identifying concentration range intervals wherein maximum interlaboratory consensus is observed. The Canadian Certified Reference Materials Project reports recommended values of lead‐210 activity in four uranium reference materials previously certified for uranium and radium‐226. Eleven laboratories participated in the interlaboratory program for DL‐1a, BL‐4a, DH‐1a and BL‐5; three measurement techniques were applied. Procedural and instrumental calibrations were performed with a certified lead solution from Amersham International Corp., thereby establishing traceability of the recommended values for lead‐210.
