Three new rock reference samples, Rhyolite JR‐3, Gabbro JGb‐2 and Hornblendite JH‐1 have been prepared by the Geological Survey of Japan for collaborative studies on their chemical composition. Twenty‐eight major, minor and trace elements were determined and presented. Abstract:Analytical data for fourteen rare‐earth elements, scandium, yttrium, zirconium and hafnium, received by May 1992, have been compiled on twenty‐six GSJ (Geological Survey of Japan) reference samples. Seventeen of them are ‘Igneous rock series’ and nine are “Sedimentary rock series”. Thirty‐seven trace elements, including rare‐earth elements, have been determined by ICP‐MS in twenty‐eight international rock standards using routine sample preparation techniques. Samples were decomposed by either pressurized HF‐HCIO4‐aqua regia attack, or by lithium borate fusion. Eleven rare earth elements (REE) have been determined in ten USGS and two CCRMP igneous rock standards using high performance ion chromatography. Duplicate analyses of two or more separately prepared aliquots of each sample were undertaken; reproducibility was better than 5% for each of the REE. In most cases, the results compare closely with published REE values for those samples for which the REE are well characterised. Where the results for individual elements are in disagreement with published data, the more erratic patterns yielded by the earlier data when plotted on chondrite‐normalised REE diagrams suggest that values determined in this study are of greater accurac

Data are presented for the six new Chinese rock standards, GSR 1 through 6. These samples include a granite, an andesite, a basalt, a sandstone, a shale, and a limestone, providing a wide range of sample types of geochemical interest. The certificate values were tested using XRF and ITNA for the major and trace elements and colorimetry, coulometry, and thermogravimetry for the ferrous iron and the volatile constitutents. Excellent agreement was obtained for the 50 elements measured, implying these standards have been well characterized generally and should be of immediate use to geochemists.

Major and trace element analyses have been obtained by wavelength dispersive X‐ray fluorescence for the Geological Survey of Japan Igneous rock series and selected samples from the Sedimentary rock series reference samples. A second mineral from the Kakanui Mineral Breccia, an anorthoclase, has been prepared as an international microprobe standard. The K2O content may be variable. Major and trace element contents are tabulated. Relatively high Sr (2260 ppm) and Ba (622 ppm) may make this mineral a useful trace element standard.
