Agricultural marketing in Britain has been primarily concerned with government policies towards distribution and processing of farm produce; the theoretical framework on which it rests is that of economics. It is argued here that: the orientation of agricultural marketing studies has been too restricted in that they have given insufficient attention either to marketing as a business subject or to ‘social marketing’; and that the behavioural sciences are a necessary complement to economics as a theoretical framework for studies in agricultural marketing. The review examines the role of these alternative theoretical approaches and illustrates their value by reference to two selected topics of importance in Britain; first‐hand marketing institutions and the marketing of meat and livestock.RésuméLA COMMERCIALISATION AGRICOLE: UNE REVUE CRITIQUE DES TEXTES PUBLIEAS SUR LA THÉORIE DE LA COMMERCIALISATION ET D'APPLICATIONS SÉLECTIONNÉESLa commercialisation agricole en Grande‐Bretagne s'est établie primordialement jusqu'à présent sur la politique gouvernementale afférente à la distribution et la transformation des denrées agricoles.

This paper considers the theoretical effects of product‐price variability upon the average profit‐levels of multi‐product firms and examines the influence of product‐price fluctuations upon the income‐levels of countries exporting products, such as primary products, the price of which is unstable. The analysis takes account of interdependence of production and shows that administrative costs apart, price stabilisation schemes may reduce the average profits of firms (farmers) and the incomes of countries exporting primary products.

An experiment for swine was conducted with corn and protein supplement to estimate production or gain functions with live pig weight. The experiment included 648 animals. While overall production functions have been estimated, the data used in this paper are direct estimates (based on an instrumental variable approach) of gain isoquants over the three weight intervals 60—100 lb, 100–150 lb and 150–215 lb. This procedure was used to circumvent problems of autoregressive disturbance terms when the same animals are used for more than one observation in the analysis. Because the percentage of protein in the ration affects daily rate of gain, equations also were estimated which relate days to attain an isoquant with ration fed. A decision model was then specified and applied to the estimated function. The decision model considers the marginal rates of substitution of the feed inputs and their prices, time of production as affected by ration and pork price.

This paper describes, in broad terms, an Aggregative Programming Model of Australian Agriculture (APMAA) currently under development at the University of New England. APMAA will simulate farmer decision‐making on more than 500 Representative Farms located in 56 regions. Linear programming is used as the basic tool for analysis, though other quantitative techniques such as regression analysis and statistical simulation are used in portions of the model. Special treatment is accorded to farmer behaviour, and production uncertainty is reflected through a weather simulator.RésuméMISE AU POINT D'UN MODÈLE DE PROGRAMMATION AGRÉGEABLE DE L'AGRICULTURE AUSTRALIENNEL'article décrit, en termes généraux, un modèle de programmation agrégeable de l'agriculture australienne (APMAA), actuellement en cours d'élaboration à l'université de New England.
