In the light of the very slight gains made by agricultural marketing co‐operatives the theory of countervailing power is re‐examined. It is emphasised that the welfare norm used in the countervailing power hypothesis is not the conventional Paretian optimality but ‘relief of social tensions’. The author argues that this relief is obtained in the case of co‐operatives not via increased profitability but in the short‐run by providing dominant and innovative farmers with an alternative, time consuming form of activity in organising co‐operative marketing. Such relief can only work when the tensions are relatively slight as is evidenced since the 1950s in the U.K.RésuméLES COOPÉRATIVES DE COMMERCIALISATION AGRICOLE. Der Autor argumentiert, dass dieser Abbau im Fall der Kooperative nicht über zunehmende Profitibilität erreicht wird, sondern kurzfristig dadurch, dass führenden und innovationsfreudigen Farmern eine alternative, zeitaufwendige Form der Tätigkeit, der Organisation von koopera‐tivem Marketing, angeboten wird. This paper examines the role and importance of egg and feed prices in influencing the size of the U.K. laying flock over the last decade, and seeks to ascertain whether these have changed as a result of changes in the institutional and structural organisation of the egg market. Of prime importance in this respect is a test of the proposition that producers'1 response to price changes will be greater, and adjustment of scale more rapid in a supported market (in this case by the British Egg Marketing Board) than in a free market. The econometric results of the study lend some support to this hypothesis. The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board was established in 1922 as the first export monopoly board and this article traces its origins and examines its activities in the early years of trading. An assessment is made of the Board's contribution to producers' returns within a general framework laid down for marketing boards. It aimed at rationalising collection and distribution, lowering transport costs both internally and to overseas markets, at reduced killing, selling, and insurance charges and at raising demand for the product. Recent changes in farm size in Britain indicate a trend towards fewer and larger holdings, which has been interpreted as increasing the structural strength of British agriculture. Little evidence is available, however, on the detailed mechanics of such changes, particularly on the way which changing farm size may affect farm fragmentation. Using a local case study of farms in central Somerset, this paper analyses the effects on fragmentation, of changes in farm size between 1963 and 1976. Sugar, or sucrose, is by far the most important natural sweetener. Alternatives to sugar, such as glucose and dextrose derived from starch, are not as sweet as sucrose and are therefore not perfect substitutes. The recent discovery of an enzyme called isomerase, which converts glucose into fructose, has however resulted in a new liquid sweetener similar to that of liquid invert sugar. The product is isomerase glucose syrup (isoglucose), better known as high fructose glucose syrup (HFGS), and is suitable for most products which are manufactured using liquid sugar. Production of HFGS was stimulated by the world sugar shortage and high prices of 1974, and it has already made important inroads into the market for sweeteners in the United States. It is beginning to appear in other industrialised markets, such as Japan and the European Community. The E.E.C. Council of Agricultural Ministers has imposed a levy on the production of HFGS in order to protect Community beet farmers. Ce produit est le sirop de glucose isomère (isoglucose), plus connu sous le nom de sirop de glucose à haute teneur de fructose (sigle anglais: HFGS) et qui convient à la plupart des produits fabriqués avec du sucre liquide.La production du HFGS a été stimulée initialement par la pénurie mondiale et les cours élevés du sucre de l'année 1974, et sa distribution a déja largement pénétré le marché des édulcorants aux Etats‐Unis. 11 commence aussi à apparaǐtre dans les autres pays industrialisés, notamment au Japon et dans les pays de la Communauté européenne. A model of the protein and lipid metabolism of growing pigs is presented in recursive linear programming form. Isoquants and iso‐composition functions are mapped onto a diet space revealing the extent to which body composition of pigs of particular genetic potential can be manipulated by nutritional means. The chemical value of proteins and theP:Eratio are critical attributes of the diet determining the biological efficiencies of feed conversion. At a constant chemical value, maximum conversion efficiencies for protein and energy occur at a point where the maximum rate of protein deposition is both energy and protein limited. Whilst these constraints are binding, further increases in chemical value of the protein will improve feed conversion if theP:Eratio is reduced accordingly.Maximum biological efficiency for protein and energy occurs at a point corresponding to the maximum chemical value of protein that can be produced from available ingredients. Economic efficiency is achieved with a slightly reduced chemical value. There is a trade‐off between technical efficiency and the raw material cost of achieving a particular growth rate, thus for the purpose of diet formulation, amino acid requirements should not be fixed independently of the expected rate of liveweight gain, the composition of that gain or the degree of maturity of the animal.RésuméVERS LA NUTRITION OPTIMALE DES PORCS D'ENGRAISSEMENT 2ÈME PARTIE: CROISSANCE DU COǓT MINIMUM ET UTILISATION DE LA VALEUR CHIMIQUE DANS LA FORMULATION DU RéGIME NUTRITIONNELLa valeur chimique des protéines et le ratio protéines‐énergie sont des attributs critiques du régime déterminant les efficacités biologiques de la conversion des aliments.
