SYNOPSISThirty‐one children between the ages of 7–17 with headache (migraine, tension, and combination) were taught biofeedback assisted self‐regulation techniques to control onset of headache and its symptoms. Headache hours per week and amount of drug usage were measured before and during treatment, at two intervals during the first year following the training (2 months and 3–12 months) and at 2–3 years after baseline for 19 of the 31 children. Twenty‐eight children were able to control 51% or more headaches after the 2‐month training period. Specifically, there was a 39% reduction in mean headache hours for tension headache Ss and a 71% reduction for the migraine and combination headache Ss. Subsequent reduction in headache continued over the 1–3 year follow‐up period. Reduction in drug usage was about 87%. SYNOPSISUsing a questionnaire, the prevalence of headache as a primary symptom was investigated amongstudents of University of Ilorin. A total of 448 female and 1308 male students who constitute 72% and 69%respectively of the entire female and male student population of the University were studied.61% of the females and 69% of the males suffered from recurrent headache. Classical migraine wasfound among 5.1% of the female and 3.4% of the male students respectively. Common migraine occurredabout 3 times as frequently as classical migraine. Muscle contraction ‐ Vascular headache was thecommonest type of headache and was diagnosed in 24% of the female and 33% of the male students.Tension headache affected 16.5% and 9.9% of the female and male students respectively, while clusterheadache was the affliction of 3 male students who constitute about 0.2% of the male student population.The commonest precipitating factors for the headache were mental and physical exhaustion, heat andmental stress for female students, and for male students, they were mental stress and alcohol. SYNOPSISThere are few findings of increased stress responses of the vascular system and the (head) muscles in migraine and tension headache patients. However, several studies ignored the headache state of the patients during the experiment and differences in sex, or used small experimental groups. In this controlled study, physiological parameters in migraine patients, tension headache patients and non‐headache controls were investigated during conditions of stress and rest. Each group was composed of at least 25 subjects. Sex was included as an independent variable, and separate analyses were carried out on patients with pain during the measurements. There were no differences in vascular responding nor in muscular responding to stress between migraine patients, tension headache patients and controls. Male migraine patients showed enhanced activity in some indicators of sympathetic activity. No evidence was found for a discrete border separating the two headache type

SYNOPSISThis study tested several clinical hypotheses about personality traits of migraine and tension headache patients in a controlled design. Achievement motivation was found to be elevated in both headache groups. The tension headache patients also exhibited greater rigidity in comparison to the migraine group and the controls. In migraine patients, both traits were positively correlated with duration of headache attacks. When the two patient groups werecombined, the headache patients had, in addition to raised achievement motivation and rigidity, morefearof failure and less impulsiveness than the controls. No evidence was found for higher prevalence of neuroticism and obsessive‐compulsive behavior in the headache groups. Neither migraine nor tension headache patients revealed an abnormal pattern of defense mechanisms. Generally, those traits related to aspects of performance were found to be more prevalent in headache patients than in control

SYNOPSISBased on observations indicating histamine release in cluster headache, Ketotifen was given to 15 patients suffering from a chronic form of this disease. The drug shows a mast cell membrane stabilizing action which proved effective in the treatment of bronchial asthma. It was administered in dosage of 1 mg 3 times daily for 8 weeks. Full remission was achieved in 8 patients. A considerable improvement was noted in 2 cases, a moderate improvement in 3, and only a slight improvement in 2 cases.

SYNOPSISA case of chronic cluster headache with unusually frequent attacks (up to 30 per day) is discussed. Such numerous attacks are usually observed in chronic paroxysmal hemicrania only. The patient did not respond to indomethacin therapy, but rapid improvement during lithium treatment was observed.

SYNOPSISThe relationships ofHLA‐antigensand Cluster Headache (C.H.) is described.60 subjects (39 males and 21 females aged between 15 and 75 years ‐ mean age 40.13 years) from Central Italy with Cluster Headache were examined. Three subgroups were identified, 29 Episodic Cluster Headache, 20 Hemicrania Cluster and 11 Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania. The 12 alleles of the Iocus‐A and the 16 alleles of the Iocus‐B were studied in the C.H. group and in 321 subjects, most of whom were blood donors, selected as a control group.Typing was carried out with the microlymphocyto‐toxicity technique used by N.I.H.Genetic frequency, relative risk (R.R.) and “linkage disequilibrium” calculation were evaluated statistically. The statistical significance was corrected taking into consideration the number of observations carried out. The X2test was used.The data showed a decreased frequency of antigen HLA‐B14 (1.66% vs 11.53% r<0.05) and HLA‐Bw21 (5% vs 13.71%) in patients with C.H. compared to the group of controls.
