摘要:
SYNOPSISEEG markers of migraine in childhood were characterized using computer techniques for harmonic analysis of the EEG during photic stimulation. We examined values of coherence, power in the alpha range, response to photic stimulation and attenuation of power in the alpha range during photic driving. With these data, we were able to discriminate 12 of 13 children with migraine from age‐matched controls. We compared our results to previous data with adults and found many properties in the spectral analyses common to both children and adults, but also found a small set of properties unique to childre

摘要:
SYNOPSISOne hundred eight patients with muscle contraction headaches completed a double‐blind, randomized, parallel trial in which they took either ibuprofen 400 mg, ibuprofen 800 mg, a spirin 650 mg, or placebo for four successive headaches. Acetaminophen was allowed as a rescue analgesic. Intensity of headache pain was recorded pretreatment and three hours posttreatment. A Pain Intensity Difference (PID) score was calculated from the difference. Patients on ibuprofen (both doses) and aspirin had significantly lower pain scores and higher PID scores at three‐hour follow‐up than did patients on placebo. Physician's global assessment indicated that both doses of ibuprofen were significantly superior to placebo; aspirin was not. The highest number of side effects occurred with aspirin (26 complaints), followed by placebo (11), ibuprofen 400 mg (3), and ibuprofen 800 mg (2); all were minor. These results suggest that, for the treatment of muscle contraction headache, ibuprofen is significantly more effective than placebo and at least as effective as as

摘要:
SYNOPSISClinical characteristics of headache in Parkinson's disease were studied. Headache was fairly concentrated in nuchal region and dull pain was the most prevalent. No correlation was found between nuchal rigidity and nuchal‐occipital pain. Pathogenesis of headache in Parkinson's disease was suspected to be somewhat different from that of muscle contraction headach

摘要:
SYNOPSISThe safety of propranolol therapy early in pregnancy is not known. A case is reported in which fatal demise occurred at 12 weeks and was related to propranolol use for migraine headaches. Propranolol has been associated with reduced umbilical blood flow in animals; this effect may be augmented and cause severe fatal ischemia in patients with the vasomotor instability of migraine.

摘要:
SYNOPSISIn this study, resting EMG levels were measured in the frontalis and temporalis muscle in patients suffering from muscle contraction headache, migraine, or mixed muscle contraction‐migraine headache. The EMG levels of these groups were never significantly higher than those of a control group of subjects without headaches. Significantly higher levels, however, were found in both muscles in the migraine and mixed headache groups if the resting EMG levels were expressed as a percentage of the EMG level during maximal contraction. There was a tendency for proportional EMG levels of both muscles in the muscle contraction headache group to be significantly elevated. Headache patients generally showed lower maximal EMG levels than control subjects. The significance of this finding is discussed in relation to the etiology of the headaches. It is concluded that proportional EMG levels are a better index of the state of contraction than absolute EMG levels and are preferable in investigations of headach

摘要:
SYNOPSISMuscle contraction headaches are assumed to be associated with relative ischemia in head muscles due to sustained contractions of these muscles. The present study examined whether an abnormally high degree of relative ischemia occurs during such contractions which were experimentally induced in various types of headache patients. Sustained fatiguing contractions at 50% of the maximum EMG amplitude were carried out in the frontalis, corrugator supercilii, and temporalis muscles. The rate of change of the power spectrum of the surface EMG was measured during the contractions. This measure may be considered as an indirect indication of the degree of relative ischemia. Patients with muscle contraction headaches, migraine, or mixed muscle contraction‐migraine headaches did not show a faster spectral shift in any of the three muscles than a group of non‐headache control subjects. Muscle contraction and mixed headache patients even showed significantly slower spectral shifts in the frontalis muscle. These results suggest that muscle contraction headaches are not associated with an abnormally high degree of relative ischemia during the sustained contractions which are believed to underlie this type of headac

摘要:
SYNOPSISThere is a growing body of literature on the psychology of headache. Little of that research effort has gone to study patient attitudes toward the disorder, for example the impact of headache on the patient's subjective quality of life. Only one study (Packard, 1979) has recently focused on differences in perception between headache patients and their physicians. The present study was designed to help fill a gap in the existing knowledge of patient perceptions. The respondents were first visit patients in a headache treatment center. A survey form was employed and revised and in two sampling efforts the opinions of two hundred fifty two patients were obtained. The following areas of empirical interest are described: demographic characteristics of the sample and headache characteristics, the patient's perceptions of headache causation, the relationship between headache and other life problems, patients' understanding of relief factors, their own coping strategies, emotional reactions during headache and the “social stigma” associated with headache.Patients frequently have concerns about where their case fits in to the whole spectrum of headache suffering. The data above, taking into account the fact that samples will differ from setting to setting, can be helpful in educating both patients and their physicians about this complex disor

摘要:
SYNOPSISTo assess comparability of research populations, tension headache sufferers recruited through advertisement or obtained from a medical psychology clinic were compared on relevant psychological and physiological variables. Differences in headache activity, personality profiles, and muscle tension were noted which may have implications for generalization of treatment results from recruited subjects to clinic patients.
