摘要:
By now most people in the UK will be aware that after 1992 there will be a single European market with (almost) free competition and free movement of goods, services and people. How will this affect the engineering profession, particularly electronics engineers, and the engineering industry? The answer is, of course, that only time will tell, and that this opinion, and any others, may well be entirely wrong. However, there are important issues that must be faced: by the profession, by industry and by education.

摘要:
One of the Attainment Targets, AT 12, in the National Curriculum for science specifies that data collection and control should span key stages 2 to 4. For control this amounts to turning on a DC motor, a light bulb, buzzers, alarms and so on. These can be performed quite easily using ordinary switches to close a simple circuit, or with some dedicated electronics, to turn on after a time delay, or in response to specified external events.

摘要:
If a thermistor is wired to a series resistor to make a potential divider network then by careful choice of resistor it is possible to design a system which has a linear transfer function between the incoming temperature signal and the outgoing voltage signal. This technique is explained and illustrated.

摘要:
We all know that combinational logic is easy to master if students get plenty of practice, but how do you motivate them to play around with ideas in logic? One approach is to use games, and I would like to describe a very simple game which I have recently used with a BTEC Level II Electronics group (BTEC Level II is at a similar level to GCSE).

摘要:
The purpose of the unit is to sense and display the speed of the wind, accurately and reliably, in aportable battery-powered unit. In addition it should be possible to connect the unit to a computer to allow the windspeed to be recorded regularly, and for use in plotting graphs. The unit should also be cheap to manufacture.

摘要:
For my Craft, Design and Technology GCSE project, I designed and built a machine which can transfer the positions of points on an object into a computer by probing it. Once the whole of the object has been probed, the computer can draw images of the object, looking from different angles. The data produced by the machine from the object can be saved onto disc so that different views of the object can be drawn from the same set of data. The machine is entirely controlled by the computer, in order to make the process of digitising an object completely automatic.

摘要:
There are many disabled children for whom special aids and adaptations are needed to enable them to lead fuller, more independent lives. During a visit to the White Lodge Childrens Centre, Chertsey, Surrey, I heard, from his teacher, of the problems of a six-year-old boy who attends the Centre. Barry is severely disabled with cerebral palsy and is unable to use any of the currently available mechanisms such as hand operated switches. There is a possibility, however, that he could gain sufficient control of his tongue to operate a small touch sensor if it could be held in position, in relation to his tongue, in such a way that his involuntary movements would not displace the sensor.
