AbstractMultidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC) employing heart‐cutting from a Carbowax 20M coated precolumn onto a heptakis (2, 3, 6‐tri‐O‐methyl)‐β‐cyclodextrin coated chiral main column allows the direct stereodifferentiation of α‐pinene, β‐pinene and limonene from complex matrices. AbstractMentha×verticillataclone 7303 (38% menthofuran, 20% menthol, 9% limonene) was crossed toMentha spicataL. (40–50% carvone). This cross produced a PO–F1population particularly rich in piperitenone oxide (62%). AbstractA comparative study of someThymusandThymbraspecies growing wild in Yugoslavia, was carried out in order to determine the possibilities of using regional resources of medicinal plants. The essential oil contents (0.70–1.60% vol./dry wt) were determined by hydrodistillation, and the oil compositions analysed by gas chromatography.The oil ofThymus glabrescensWilld. contained 29% 1, 8‐cineole, 0.2% thymol and 2% carvacrol. Oil samples ofThymus pulegioidesL. contained less than 0.7% 1, 8‐cineole, but 6–15%p‐cymene, 1–22% thymol and 10–30% carvacrol, while one of these samples consisted of 50% linalol.
