AbstractSteam distillation ofDysoxylum richii(A. Gray) C.D.C. fruits gave a greenish coloured oil in 0.19% yield whileSynedrella nodiflora(L.) Gaertn. leaves gave a yellow oil in 0.02 % yield. The composition of the essential oils was determined by the use of capillary gas‐liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The oil fromDysoxylum richiifruits was found to be rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (58 %) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (35 %). The major components of the oil are δ‐cadinene (20.4%), germacrene‐D (16.6%) and cadinol isomers (21%). The classes of compounds detected in the leaf oil ofSynedrella nodiflorawere aliphatic alcohols, monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. AbstractPeaks characteristic of 1,8‐cineole consistently appeared in spectra obtained by multiple internal reflectance spectroscopy (MIR) from the surfaces of 1,8‐cineole‐richEucalyptus camaldulensisDehnh. leaves. The absorbances derived from the peaks at wave numbers of 1050 and 1078 cm−1were well correlated (r2= 0.87 and 0.91 respectively) with the 1,8‐cineole yield of leaves from trees in the field known to have high, medium and low yields of this compound. Absorbances at these wave numbers were not recorded in spectra from a contrasting cineole‐poor chemotype of high sesquiterpene content. The wave pattern of this chemotype was readily distinguishable from the pattern of the regular, 1,8‐cineole‐rich phenotype. Multiple internal reflectance spectroscopy may be useful for field‐testing eucalypts for their potential 1,8

AbstractNew sulphur compounds in Bulgarian rose essential oil were investigated as follows: the steam distilled oil of the rose petals was fractionated by distillation, column chromatography and high‐performance liquid chromatography. GC and GS‐MS were employed for identification.In this analysis, 16 sulphur compounds were identified, andn‐butyl methyl disulphide, dimethyl trisulphide,n‐hexyl methyl disulphide, 3‐(4‐methylpent‐3‐enyl)thiophene, 3‐methyl‐2‐(3‐methylbut‐2‐enyl)thiophene, 3‐(4,8‐dimethyl‐nona‐3,7‐dienyl)thiophene, α‐mintsulphide, 4‐(4‐methylpent‐3‐enyl)‐1,2‐dithiacyclohex‐4‐ene, 1,2‐epithiohumulene, 4,5‐epithiohumulene and 4,5‐epithiocaryophyllene were identified for the first time in rose oil.
