AbstractThe principal spectroscopic properties of the four dihydrocarveol diastereoisomers are reinvestigated. The interpretation of their1H‐NMR spectra allows unambiguous differentiation of the diastereoisomers and the determination of their conformations. ‘Negative ion chemical ionization‐Collision‐induced dissociation’ experiments have been performed on the quasimolecular ions [M ‐ H]−using a FT‐ICR spectrometer. The daughter ion spectra of the alkoxide negative ions [M ‐ H]−of the four isomers show substantial differences which can be used for a diastereoisomeric differentiation and the confirmation of the conformations. AbstractThe essential oil from the herb ofLaggera alata(D. Don) Sch. Bip. ex Oliv. was analysed by means of GLC, LSC, GC–MS and1H‐NMR spectrometry. Most of its components were identified, amongst which were phenolic ethers (about 45%), monoterpenes (22%) and sesquiterpenes (12%). The main components of the oil were 2,5‐dimethoxy‐p‐cymene ( = thymoquinol dimethyl ether; 44%), and sabinene (16%). Another component (3%) was found to be 2‐methyl‐5‐(1‐methylethyl)‐6‐hydroxycyclohex‐2‐en‐1‐one ( = 6‐hydroxycarvotanacetone); it has until now not been reported to occur in nature. Another rare compound detected was 4‐hydroxycarvotanacetone‐7‐O‐angelate (2%). An olfactographic analysis of the oil was also carried out. Chromatographic analyses of the essential oil ofL.

AbstractExtracts of the flowerheads ofTanacetum parthenium(L.) Schultz Bip. were analysed by gas chromatography‐mass spectroscopy (GC–MS). Those components that could not be matched with MS data banks were isolated by column chromatography/HPLC and then characterized by1H‐NMR. AbstractSteam distilled volatile oil from marjoram (Origanum majoranaL.) was evaluated for its antibacterial and antifungal activities. A range of 25 bacterial and five fungal species was used in this study, and included animal and plant pathogens, food poisoning bacteria and mycotoxigenic fungi.
