There have been recent dramatic advances in guided‐wave optical devices and although only a few functions have so far been integrated onto a single substrate, the individual devices are being applied and there is promise for integration in the future. The most dramatic advances have occurred with respect to semiconductor lasers, with GaAs and GaAlAs lasers now operating at room temperature with long life. A variety of techniques, including chemical etching, liquid‐phase epitaxy and ion implantation have been used for fabricating waveguides on these materials. Similar advances have been made with respect to guiding and electro‐optic effects on LiNbO3and LiTaO3. Devices discussed in the paper include the guides themselves, junctions and bends, switches or modulators, the laser sources, and detectors. Many of the electromagnetic problems encountered in the analysis of these devices are inhomogeneous and anisotropic and some are nonlinear. Mode conversion is a common problem, and sensitivity to polarization must be kept in

As a result of recent progress in the glass refining process and index profile control technique, it is possible to get a very low loss and wide band SELFOC fiber which is made of multicomponent glass. For experiments of high bit‐rate PCM transmission using this fiber, a compact 400 Mb/s repeater has been developed. Transmission of a 400 Mb/s PCM signal has been achieved at an error rate of less than 1×10−9with 5.2 km repeater spacing. Experiments on two repeater links showed no significant degradation in error rate characteristics. A theoretical model is developed to describe the CW operation of a Brillouin optical‐fiber ring oscillator. Expressions describing both the oscillation threshold and the Brillouin output power are derived as a function of the design parameters and the conditions to maximize the output power are then determined. For the ring resonator configuration considered it is shown that the maximum external conversion efficiency that can be achieved is 25%. An optically activated switch was fabricated on LiNbO3substrate by deposition of photoconductor‐metal electrode structure on two channel waveguides obtained by the outdiffusion process. One waveguide was overcoated with a CdS film, and served as a light detector which converted the optical signal in that waveguide into an electrical signal. Utilizing the electrooptic effect, this electrical signal modulated the light propagating in the second waveguide by changing the refractive index, and the cutoff condition, of the waveguiding channel between two metal electrodes. (The second waveguide and associated electrodes constituted an electrically activated electrooptic modulator.) The waveguides in the optically controlled switch can be either single or multimode. The length of the device can be short in comparison with other switching schemes. At an interface with incidence‐angle‐dependent reflection coefficient, a highly collimated totally reflected beam experiences a displacement of the beam axis and the phase center from the location predicted by geometrical optics. Studies in the literature of the lateral (longitudinal and transverse) beam shift have produced conflicting results. Here, the shift phenomenon for gaussian beams is analyzed by a rigorous method whereby the high‐frequency point source or line source Green's function solution as expressed in ray‐optical terms is converted into the beam solution by assigning a complex value to the source coordinates. Results obtained for two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional electromagnetic fields at plane isotropic and anisotropic interfaces are compared critically with those found elsewhere. Also included are the lateral shifts at a curved cylindrical boundary, which have not been studied heretofore. These planar and curved geometries are relevant, respectively, to beam coupling into slab and fiber waveguides. Our expressions for the beam shifts are consistent with those required for correct conversion of multiply‐reflected rays or beams in slabs and fibers into guided modes, thereby lending further support to the argume
