摘要:
AbstractWhat do rhetoric and organizations have in common? Organizations, like rhetoric, can be understood and managed as systems of values and beliefs that underlie the ways members and groups try to influence others. Organizations can be studied as rhetorical cultures, because both are guided by the symbols used to induce cooperation. This article illustrates these and other similarities between rhetoric and organization and suggests ways to identify and manage organization‐culture

摘要:
AbstractHow effective is rhetoric as a metaphor for culture? This article analyzes Shapiro and Schall's use of rhetoric as the overlying principle for managing organization‐cultures and concludes that the authors are confusing metaphor with reality. In doing so, they leave out some important aspects of organization and culture. The rhetorical “rules” are examined and challenged through an analysis of recent literature and a logical exploration of the problems that arise when organizations are viewed only as influence systems and all action is seen as rhe

摘要:
AbstractBetter selection of personnel can reduce training costs and attrition rates by matching candidates more effectively with jobs. But what can trainers do to improve their selection of personnel? One answer is illustrated in an adventure game designed to help measure problem sensitivity in potential candidates for the Canadian Navy's Maritime Surface and Subsurface officer program. This article examines problem sensitivity as an important criterion for officer candidates and the resulting development and testing of the adventure game to measure this attribute. The authors provide ways to adapt this procedure and the test instrument for use with other groups in other situations.

摘要:
AbstractNeeds assessment is a necessary starting point in developing a training program, but assessing training needs may be a difficult task. Conducting a needs assessment oriented to a reality‐referenced competency model can provide: a self‐norming validation of training needs by the people who will be trained, fast feedback, an effective method of evaluating the usefulness of proposed training programs, and adaptability to changing needs. This article describes research conducted during a redesign of training at the Texas Rehabilitation Commission and explains why the reality‐referenced training system is a valid way to complete a needs asses

摘要:
AbstractHow can managers receive realistic feedback about the consequences of their behavior? One undervalued source of feedback is subordinates' observations. This article describes a study of subordinates' observations that were used to evaluate managers' skills. This source is compared with other sources of feedback, and methods of collecting and using subordinates' observations to improve managerial skills are presented. The study further illustrates how subordinates' observations can provide a realistic, positive method for gathering information about managers' long‐term behavior so that the company, subordinates, and managers all benefit from the skills assessmen

摘要:
AbstractHow a training program is introduced may influence a person's motivation to attend and participate actively in the program. A pretraining environment consisting of factors such as the supervisor's style, co‐workers' attitudes toward and experiences with training, the company's publicity about the program, the program's credibility, and corporate attendance policies may have an important effect on an individual's perception of the importance of training and motivation for attending and performing well in the program. An analysis of these contextual factors suggests propositions to predict the influence of the pretraining environmen
