The advocates of theDorfgeschichtein the 1840s were concerned to put it forward as the vehicle of a specifically German form of realism which renewed the essential values of their native literary tradition. Although critics at this time spent much effort attempting to find precursors or models for the new genre in the literature of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, they tended to disregard Zschokke'sDas Goldmacherdorf(1817), a work which was still highly regarded and widely popular and which both in its form and preoccupations seemed decisively to anticipate literary development in the 1840s. The discussion of the narrative seeks to show that while critics in the Vormärz could acknowledge Zschokkes's analysis of the power of economic‐commercial forces in the day‐to‐day life of the village, they were more concerned to reject his view of social reform as a process imposed from outside, a process which involved the destruction of the peasant inheritance of the community in the name of a scientifically ratified notion of pr

The article sets out to examine various facets of the highly complex process of self‐presentation in Rimbaud's work with particular reference to theIlluminations.Predicating its argument on the famous declarations about themoiin the letters of May 13 and 15 1871, the paper relates the Rimbaldian definition of the self to other such attempted definitions [Baudelaire, Kafka, Michaux]. Three key areas of self‐depiction are treated in depth in the course of the study. These are [i]the highly sophisticated process of role‐playing in Rimbaud involving preferential identities; [ii] the very deliberate alienation and distantiation by which Rimbaud disengages from these roles and the poems in which they appear; and [iii]the relationship between self and other in theIlluminationswhich is characterized by a mixture of intimacy and aloofness. 摘要:
Se voulant emblématique d'une démarche qui cherche à décrire une activité de lecture plutôt que des contenus textuels préconstruits, cette étude entend illustrer la manière dont une même lecture peut mettre en œuvre différents codes et modes d'intellection en privilégiant tour à tour différents types d'indices. Elle tente également d'éprouver la fécondité de l'hypothèse de Paul de Man selon laquelle tout texte est lisible comme la thématisation “en abyme” de la quête de sens dont il est lui‐même l'objet de la part du lecteur. Prenant pour support la nouvelle de Frédérick TristanLe train immobile, l'étude commence par montrer qu'il est possible de lire un tel texte selon trois perspectives référentielles bien distinctes (réalisme, fantastique, mythe).
