AbstractThis study was designed to test the resource model of preventive health behavior (PHB) that incorporates social and health resources as causes of good health habits. The findings were based on survey data collected in 1979 on a national probability sample of 3,025 adults. Factor analysis was used to construct indexes of PHB and of health. Five PHB factors were regressed on education and income; on three health factors; and on control variables age, sex, and race. The model predicted dental and fitness factors. Higher education and the health factor of better health comparison consistently predicted the PHB factors. It was concluded that several types of PHBs are unrelated to one another and that the causes of these specific PHBs do vary.

AbstractA survey was conducted of graduates of ten public health nursing master's degree programs that support the aggregate approach to public health nursing. Topics included activities related to the aggregate focus, demographic and employment characteristics, job satisfaction, and reasons for selecting positions. There was a high level of employment among the respondents, and they tended to be satisfied with their jobs. They worked in diverse settings and held positions ranging from staff nurse to top administrator. Although the graduates performed aggregate focus activities in any setting, there were differences in level of performance among persons in the different types of positions. Based on analysis of the data, recommendations are made in areas of graduate programs, graduates, and employers and communities.

AbstractThis study illustrates an initial step in applying marketing principles to a preventive health behavior‐exercise. Attitudinal correlates of the decision to exercise or not were identified among a sample of 135 university faculty and staff. A correlational design was employed to associate intentions to exercise with subsequent behavior. The conceptual framework was the theory of reasoned action. This model posits that perceived outcomes of and social reinforcers for a behavior that are most highly polarized are salient and probable determinants of the behavior. The study revealed that outcomes of exercise that appeared to be most motivating were not directly related to health concerns but to a desire to look and feel good. Nurses who design intervention strategies aimed at increasing exercise among groups similar to the sample should emphasize the likelihood that exercise will lead to a greater sense of well‐be

AbstractEpidemiology underlies public health theory and practice. Sixty NLN‐accredited master's degree programs in community and public health nursing were surveyed with respect to epidemiology course content, instructor preparation, and administrative responsibility. Of 55 programs responding, two‐thirds offered an epidemiology course. Fewer, about half, required their students to take such a course. Content areas most frequently included were morbidity/mortality and incidence/prevalence; the areas included least often were screening and epidemics. Instructors typically had a PhD in epidemiology. Most required courses were located in schools of nursing. Requirements varied by region, length of program, size of program, and presence of school of public health; these differences, however, were not statistically significant. AbstractPublic Health nursing in the 1980s, together with the health care system in general, is facing complex social and professional issues, including professional autonomy, governmental relations, funding sources, cost containment, maintenance of standards, and aggregate versus individualiied foci of care. History can provide great insights into these recurrent issues, as exemplified by the Red Cross Rural Nursing Service.This historical review traces the origins and progress of the American Red Cross Rural Nursing Service through the first 10 years of its existence. Major emphasis is placed on the organizational development and evolution of the Service. The impact and early contributions of the Service to the development of public health nursing in the United States are still vital to contemporary and current social issues.
