摘要:
This article describes the setting up and maintenance of a pyramid support network for service staff working with people with mental handicaps. The scheme ran for nearly four years on the Isle of Wight. The network consisted of 12 groups of staff. Each group met, within work time, several times a year to discuss personal or work issues in a non‐threatening and supportive atmosphere. The rationale behind the scheme was that if staff felt valued, by having good personal support at work, this was likely to maintain high staff morale. This, in turn, should have a good outcome for service users. The scheme was successful while it ran, but it finished because of a number of reasons. These included financial restraints on travel and difficulty in releasing staff from work with service user

摘要:
This article outlines the setting up of a specialist social work team, whose responsibility included working with people with severe mental handicaps of all ages. The way in which team members went about their task is described, including the use of a collaborative teamwork approach. An index of all local people with severe mental handicaps led to the formulation of goals for team members, which were additional to their individually allocated work. Adults living with older parents were given priority, as were ways of widening choice in occupation and leisure, work with families whose child with a severe mental handicap was under five years of age, and means of establishing contact with families of Asian origin or background. The article concludes that a team collaborative approach was valuable. The team's experiences might offer some guidance to others.

摘要:
In order to provide services which will enhance the image of service users and promote opportunities for them to develop, it is necessary to evaluate what is provided in relation to these high aims. This paper describes the attempts of some people in Bath District Health Authority to create a monitoring process for doing this. The previous article in this series (Abbott, Howell, and James, 1990) outlined the many issues involved in this process. This article describes in detail the method which evolved. The benefits and limitations of the approach are discussed.

摘要:
Relocation has become a familiar prospect for many people living in long‐stay institutions. This article summarises research evidence on the effects of involuntary relocation, from which it draws conclusions and offers guidelines for managers and clinicians.Three issues appear to have a major impact on the likelihood of adverse effects of relocation on people with mental handicaps. These are: the vulnerability of individuals; the quality of their preparation for a move; and the quality of life in the new environment. People who are likely to be vulnerable to the effects of relocation include those who have severe mental handicaps and are withdrawn, those who are frail, those with an additional sensory impairment, and those with depressive or psychotic illnesses.A second article will describe the relocation of people within an institution, taking account of the conclusions presented her

摘要:
An important and major task for services is to inform service users of their rights and how to exercise them. Some of the people using the Mental Impairment Evaluation and Treatment Service, which is based in a psychiatric hospital, do so on an informal basis. Others have been admitted formally under a section of theMental Health Act, 1983.Using a semi‐structured interview schedule, it was found that service users had differing levels of knowledge about theAct, and how it affects their lives. A series of group sessions was organised, designed primarily to inform them about theAct, and about their rights in relation to Mental Health Review Tribunals. The interview schedule was used again after the sessions, when most people appeared to have gained new information. Possible improvements to the group sessions are discusse

摘要:
This article considers why children with severe learning difficulties may be vulnerable to sexual abuse, and what teachers may be able to do to minimise the risk of them becoming victims in abusive sexual relationships. Sexual abuse is defined and some information is given on its prevalence. Characteristics which may leave children with severe learning difficulties particularly at risk are related, and the negative effects on those who are abused are outlined. The responsibility of teachers to report suspected cases of abuse and to teach children safety rules is considered. Special ethical and practical considerations when teaching children with severe learning difficulties about sexual abuse are discussed.

摘要:
Pedestrian skills relating to crossing busy roads and using pedestrian crossings were taught to two women with severe mental handicaps. Training and assessment sessions were all held in real traffic conditions. The required target behaviours were trained using the techniques of role play, modelling, practice, shaping, and prompting. Base line, post‐training, and generalisation assessments were conducted in both conditions. The women's performances in all the sessions were video‐taped and analysed by two independent raters. Both women showed an improvement during training which was maintained at the post‐training and generalisation assess

摘要:
An anxiety management group, which used adaptations of traditional cognitive‐behavioural techniques, was offered to eight adults with mild or moderate mental handicaps. Group members reported that sharing their experiences of anxiety, and learning new skills, such as abdominal breathing and relaxation, were the most effective methods employed. Suggested changes for the organisation of future groups are considere
