SUMMARYClinical experience of using diets in managing behavioural and physical problems associated with mental handicap is recorded. Whilst reservations about the significance of the observations are acknowledged, it is concluded that appropriate diets may be a useful addition to the range of treatments which can be tried for alleviating severe and intractable problems. Appropriate monitoring must be maintained and care must be taken in the selection of people to be placed on diets.

SUMMARYThe revenue costs of two small houses were compared with those of five larger, local, community‐based units and two mental handicap hospitals. The community units were cheaper than the small houses and the hospitals, despite serving people with more severe handicaps. The small houses were slightly more expensive than the hospitals but, under certain assumptions, could be viewed as incurring equivalent costs. Clear evidence of economies of scale was not found except in the comparison between the community units and the small houses. SUMMARYThe article summarises the findings of an independent evaluation of three years' progress in planning for the AWS. Although parental involvement has been high, and joint working between health and social services departments has improved over the three years, involvement of local education authorities and people with mental handicaps must be increased if the ideals of the AWS are to be attained.

SUMMARYThe community services received by 67 children severely handicapped by tuberous sclerosis were investigated by interviewing their parents. 60 per cent of the children at school were in special care units, and 81 per cent had multiple handicaps. 25 per cent of parents had no contact with community services, and 45 per cent no contact with a social worker. This had implications for the large number of parents who did not receive respite care. It was more difficult for adults with multiple handicaps to receive care in the community.

SUMMARYMany students with mental handicaps fail to master basic counting and number skills, even after 10 years' schooling. It is suggested that making numbers meaningful, simplifying tasks, and making learning fun is essential. The use of number games, introduced in a planned way ensuring success at every stage, can aid the learning process.
