摘要:
SUMMARY.The article outlines an intervention in a special needs unit in an adult training centre. Low levels of client activity prior to intervention increased significantly upon the introduction of: (i) staff training; (ii) weekly review meetings; (iii) use of thePortage Checklist; and (iv) a structured daily timetable. Results are discussed in the context of increasing levels of activity by using a comprehensive yet flexible approach, as opposed to more traditional room management procedures which the authors consider are not always appropriate when working with people who are profoundly handicapped.

摘要:
SUMMARY.The awareness of anxiety and vulnerability of counsellors can be helped by trained and sensitive supervisors. Recognition is required that in all relationships there must be two way communication. Counsellors may avoid this by concentrating only on the giving aspects. Supervisors may be too positive and reassuring, and be tempted into omnipotence. If such pitfalls are avoided counsellors can develop an open and enabling situation with their clients, linking the unique personal resources which exist in people who are handicapped and those who live and work with them.

摘要:
SUMMARYProgram Analysis of Service Systems (PASS) is an assessment tool that evaluates the quality of any agency or system providing services to any human client group. Based on normalisation principles (Wolfensberger, 1972), it looks at not only the efficiency of the service, but also the environment which it provides and the extent to which its ideology approaches that of normalisation. This paper attempts to introduce and describe the features of a PASS evaluation, and to review some of the research findings using PASS in the evaluation of services to people who are mentally handicapped.
