摘要:
Staff are the most important resource of a service for people with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour. Good staff support helps to prevent stress, maintain high staff morale and aid staff erformance. This article describes the Staff Support Questionnaire which was developed as a means of evaluating staff support. The evidence, to date, suggests that it is a reliable and valid measure which can be used to identify the particular strengths and needs of support systems.

摘要:
Since it was first coined the term ‘an ordinary life’ has become a shorthand way of expressing the principle that people with learning difficulties have a right and a need to live like others in the community. For most people an ordinary life means marriage and children. Yet people with learning difficulties still face an uphill struggle in proving their fitness for parenthood (Booth&Booth, 1992). Here Sarah Armstrong tells her story in her own words. The Armstrongs illustrate the challenge that practitioners still have to address in finding a balance between child protection and family support. As Prosser (1992) has argued, professional practice too often ‘seems to see the good of the child requiring the sacrifice of the family’. The possibility that parent–child relationships are worth supporting even though they may not meet all the child's needs has to be regarded more seriously (Gilhool&Gran, 1985). The literature on parenting by people with learning difficulties (see, for example, Tymchuket al., 1987) has drawn almost exclusively on expert, official, clinical or professional sources of evidence; the parents as people rarely make any appearance (Booth&Booth, 1993). In a context where wide discrepancies often exist between parent and professional perspectives (Llewellyn, nd.), the development of more responsive services entails listening carefully to users like Sarah Armstrong (especially on issues like access and counselling). Although not representative of parents with learning difficulties in any statistical sense, her story is true to the experience of many parents in our study (Booth&Booth, for

摘要:
There has been much recent debate on the part parents may play in the education of their children. This debate appears to apply equally to special and mainstream education. The following article discusses some of the literature on the area of home–school links and presents an illustration of a boy with autism who, due mainly to his extreme non‐compliance, appears to have been incorrectly labelled as severely mentally handicapped. The perseverance of his parents and the open attitude of his present teacher challenged this assessment and the boy began to make good progr

摘要:
A 55 year old woman who had Down Syndrome became confused, forgetful and rapidly lost several of her skills. She was diagnosed as having dementia but following hormonal tests was found to have hypothyroidism. She regained most of her skills following treatment with thyroxine medication. As there are suitable medical treatments for thyroid disease, community teams and family practitioners should be aware of this common association between Down Syndrome and thyroid diseases. People with Down Syndrome should have periodic screening for the presence of hypothyroidism as part of their primary health care.

摘要:
As a contribution to National Integration Week during 1992, BILD organised a special one day conference to explore the arguments for and against the integration of all children with disabilities into ordinary schools. The Great Integration Debate provided a forum for parents, teachers and other professionals and students who had experienced different forms of special educational provision. The motion under debate was quite simply ‘special schools should be abolished’. The debate created a great deal of interest and it was suggested that the main position of papers might be of interest to a much wider audience than was able to attend on the day. Papers based on other presentations appear in other issues ofMental Handi
