摘要:
SUMMARYIn the literature on linguistics, language acquisition, and disordered language there is much confusion in the use of terminology (Lyons, 1970; Sheridan, 1972; Crystal, 1980, 1982a). Even basic terms which have quite distinct meanings are often used interchangeably, seriously hindering staff whose job it is to meet the needs of people who have problems with language. As Crystal (1976) states, terms should be clearly defined and consistently used. This article explores the meanings of certain key terms in the hope that they will be better understood, and more consistently used, by staff working with mentally handicapped people. It also indicates some important aspects of language, paving the way for a discussion of the language curriculum in subsequent articles.

摘要:
In recent years considerable progress has been made in the provision of short stay care facilities. As policies of community care begin to make themselves felt an increasing number of families are using such short stay arrangements to provide relief from the taxing business of looking after their mentally handicapped relatives. The effect of this has been to put nursing and care staff into more frequent touch with the families concerned. I want to argue that such contact can be used in positive and creative ways if staff relate to families with sensitivity and understanding. Whilst this might seem to be an obvious point to make, I will try to show that such a response may not be as easy to give as it sounds. I will also suggest some principles of sound practice for workers who are involved with families at the point at which they take over the care of their handicapped relatives.

摘要:
Part 1 of this article (Mental Handicap, December 1983) discussed local strategies for encouraging the development of community mental handicap teams in districts that have yet to adopt this collaborative approach to community services for mentally handicapped people. If you find yourself in a district which has yet to discuss a coordinated community service, perhaps you should be taking action.

摘要:
We have two children, Joanne and Carly. Joanne is a normal, healthy child who attends the local primary school and is making good progress. Carly is mentally handicapped and suffers from a genetically based illness called tuberous sclerosis. She attends a special school and receives additional care and training.I decided to write this narrative in a simple way, and as a down to earth account of family life with a mentally handicapped child. I would like professionals to read it, and maybe enhance their understanding of situations; parents, to show them that they are not on their own; and those not connected with mental handicap, as this section of health care needs all the positive publicity it can get

摘要:
Barnardo's Professional Fostering Scheme for severely mentally handicapped children in the North West of England includes home teaching from the organisation's psychologists. The first year of teaching, based on thePortagemodel, was evaluated and found to be only moderately successful. It seemed that there was a need for flexibility, both in type of visit and frequency, dependent on each child's needs, the foster parents' needs, and the input from other sources. An alternative model was developed which aims to provide this flexibility and to impart skills and knowledge to foster parents to enable them to function independently.
