Most psychologists have heard of Thurstone, and know him as a pioneer of mathematical psychology and factor analysis. But his appearances in history books are rare and peripheral, as a man of technical prowess rather than intellectual achievement, and at best he is seen as a link in the tradition culminating in signal detection and mathematical learning theory. Nineteen eighty‐seven is the centenary of his birth, so it is a timely moment to correct this picture. Thurstone was influenced by G. H. Mead, and his work is best placed within the pragmatist movement, not as moving towards the mechanistic psychology that now dominates psychology. Viewed in this way, his true status and the reasons for his relative neglect become apparent. This is illustrated by a detailed consideration of his mathematical learning model

A number of methods which can be used to scan free recall lists are described. These methods will be of use in an initial exploratory analysis of responses with a view to checking the data before proceeding with more sophisticated analyses. The aim is to bring atypical recall patterns to the attention of the experimenter so that any aberrant data may be excluded if necessary or to allow such patterns to be studied further.

Certain latent variable models for dichotomous items define a latent scale, in the sense of ordering of the items by difficulty, the same ordering applying to all subpopulations of respondents. These models, which may be either unidimensional or multidimensional, have item characteristic surfaces that do not cross. All models with this property place strong restrictions on the behaviour of the observable distribution of item responses, restrictions which may be compared with empirical data to aid in evaluating whether the items have a latent scale. To this end, two inequalities are obtained for the observable item response distribution: one describes the effects of transpositions of item responses on the distribution, and the other compares the distribution with an exchangeable distribution. An example illustrates some ways in which the inequalities may be used, and briefly discusses the related question of dimensionality. Other applications are briefly discussed.

The investigation was concerned with the principal components analysis of compound variables which do not conform to the linear model. It was conducted using artificial data in which measures on compound variables were derived by multiplying and dividing the scores on the components, rather than adding and subtracting them. The results indicate that using the linear model leads to these variables being resolved just as accurately as variables which do comply with the linear model. However, the correct factor pattern is not always achieved using the Varimax criterion for rotating the principal components.

Following the discussion by Still&White (1981), an investigation of the properties of approximate randomization tests used in place of analysis of variance is presented.Errors in Still&White have been corrected and explanations are offered for some of the consequent discoveries. As a result of this, more reserved conclusions about the power of the approximate randomization test relative to the usualFtest are made.
