ABSTRACTA brief experiment is described in which breakdown of a bedded sandstone is induced using a diurnal regime of heating and cooling between 53°and 21°C, combined with exposure to 10 % salt solutions. The experiment differs from predecessors in that moisutre absorption and loss is directed through one exposed surface. By doing this flaking parallel to the exposed surface is generated which resembles that described on salt-weathered surfaces in hot deserts. A variety of salt solutions is used, but results suggest that the orientation of bedding planes with respect to the exposed surface may exert a considerable control upon both nature and rate of breakdown.

ABSTRACTThe influence of rock mass strength on slope gradients on the seaward facing scarps surrounding the interior plateaux of southern Africa is analysed. From a study of scarp slopes on a variety of lithologies (basalt, shales, sandstones and granites) it is possible to demonstrate that gradients of bedrock slopes are in equilibrium with the mass strength of the rock. The idea that parallel retreat is the cause of free face development is contested, and it is contended that the widespread occurrence of strength equilibrium slopes is evidence of the continuing adjustment of slope form to rock mass strength, and that parallel retreat will occur only when rock mass strength is uniform into the slope.

ABSTRACTTwo models were devised to investigate the development of wave-cut shore platforms, and in particular, how platform width changes through time. One model considers the rates of erosion at the high and low tide levels; whereas the other is concerned with the way in which the tide distributes wave energy within the tidal range. Despite these differences, both models indicate that platforms eventually attain states of dynamic equilibrium. Using data from a variety of morphogenic environments, the models suggest that sufficient time has been available since the sea reached its present level, for shore platforms to be at, or close to their equilibrium states.

ABSTRACTThis paper presents an experimental study of the settling behaviour of fine-grained suspensions in a saline environment. The effect of flocculation is illustrated by frequency distribution curves for different settling diameters. The analyses were performed with a Sedigraph X-ray equipment. Observations of the settling process were made and distinction between different modes of settling are presented.

ABSTRACTThe face of the present Karlstad delta is to a large extent affected by human activities during recent decades. To reproduce as much as possible of the original topography and morphology of the recent delta region, a map related to the year 1924 was constructed. Sources of information, methods of preparation and accuracy of the compiled map are described and discussed.To investigate the distribution of different delta elements and to characterize the delta, quantitative analyses are carried out on the map information.
