ABSTRACTThe local climate is described by using models coupled to form larger units. The work has a geographical approach in which the surface properties are the most important parameters. One example is from the project on a local climatological model for prediction of air and road surface temperatures along road stretches, where five geographical factors are primarily considered. The other is from an urban climatological project and deals with the relation between land use, urban structure and local climate.

ABSTRACTThe long record (1722–1989) of annual mean temperatures in Uppsala, central Sweden, is used to study how different features of temporal variations in the data are revealed by various simple statistical filters. The data are analysed in two ways; by dividing the time series into consecutive periods, which are compared to each other, and by subjecting the full time series to various low-pass filters and other moving statistics. These include the conventional Gaussian filters, and running medians, as well as the unconventional technique of running histograms. The latter were used to study temporal variations in the frequency distribution of temperatures. The results suggest that apparent long-term variations in the Gaussian-filtered curve are, in fact, to a large extent caused by variations in the frequency distribution. This leads us to conclude that care should be exercised when interpreting the results of this kind of simple statistical low-pass filters.
