SummaryA study was made of the prevalence of serum precipitins toMicropolyspora faeni, Thermoactinomyces vulgaris, Aspergillus fumigatus, and pigeon serum in population groups suspected to be at high risk for the development of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Pigeon breeders' sera contained precipitins mainly to pigeon serum (38%) andA. fumigatus(18%). Occupants of homes in which forced air heating systems were investigated for the presence of microorganisms reacted mostly withM. faeni(13%) andA. fumigatus(8%). Individuals from environments where several cases of hypersensitivity pneumonitis were discovered reacted largely withM. faeni(28%) andT. vulgaris(21%). Sera supplied by physicians from patients with respiratory symptoms reacted primarily toA. fumigatus(24%) and to a lesser extent toM. faeni(16%) andT. vulgaris(9%). The results indicate that the prevalence of precipitins to the tested antigens is not uniform and may be influenced by the environment. Furthermore, the prevalence of precipitins in groups at risk is greater than previously reported for the normal population.

SummaryA group of eighty‐four sera from a selected population of patients suspected of hypersensitivity to food and environmental allergens was examined by both RAST and passive transfer in monkeys for IgE and IgG (S‐TS) antibodies respectively. SummaryTwo antigens, both containing tolyl groups, were compared for ability to detect IgE antibodies in workers hypersensitive to toluene diisocyanate. One antigen, formed by reaction of p‐tolyl isocyanate with human serum albumin, detected antibodies in each of ten hypersensitive workers. A second tolyl antigen, formed by reaction of p‐toluoyl chloride and human serum albumin, and therefore lacking isocyanate linkages, detected antibodies in seven of the ten workers. In RAST assays, sera from toluene diisocyanate‐sensitive workers demonstrated higher binding to human serum albumin‐coated control discs than did sera from non‐sensitive workers. SummaryTotal serum IgE concentrations of normal and Russian thistle (Salsola pestifer) pollen hypersensitive individuals were determined in an Iranian population, using the solid phase radioimmunoassay technique.
