摘要:
Frederick L. Bates' career has been characterized by a single quest, the creation of an internally consistent theoretical model through which sociologists can conceptualize and analyze social structure from the simplest group structures to complex networks of groups and organizations. The basic elements of this model of social structure are examined and the model's theoretical foundations, assumptions and applications are discussed. Included are perspectives on structural modeling, self‐ referential systems theory and the concepts of social structure, social organization, culture, norms, and society as a non‐sys

摘要:
Despite sociopolitical controversy surrounding the solid waste crisis, little sociological attention has focused on this crucial environmental issue. Drawing on research from the technological controversies, environmental concern, and solid waste literatures, this study examines the pre‐implementation anxieties of a Louisiana community faced with a proposal to build an incinerator in its backyard. Utilizing survey data, a causal path model is developed in which the perceived advantages of the technology, general environmental concern, and support for recycling initiatives are identified as explanatory variables of incinerator opposition. Implications of these findings for the study of technical controversies and the larger solid waste crisis also are suggeste

摘要:
Theoretical discussions of power assume that power alters the behavior but not the structure of participants. A significant consequence of subordination to power, however, is that the composition, constitution and structure of agents are transformed. After identifying the fallacy of the unitary subject it is argued, and demonstrated in a case study, that power involves a disunity of the subject. These points are then integrated into a discussion of the dimensions of power.

摘要:
Media constructions of social problems usually rework the claims of activists and other primary claimsmakers. However, the news media acted as primary claims‐makers in discovering and reporting the 1987 Los Angeles freeway violence problem. The press drew upon cultural resources in constructing this problem, applying a conventional template for social problems stories and using familiar imagery to depict freeway shootings. The social organization of claimsmaking, as well as contingencies in the histories of individual campaigns, affect the choice of cultural resources used to construct social problem

摘要:
Using survey data collected from a sample of college students, the authors explore variability in high culrure orientation. Parent's socioeconomic status, traditionally thought to be predictive of high culture orientation, was not significantly related to it in this sample. Factors found to be associated with high culture orientation include interpersonal experience, occupational orientation, and cultural knowledge and participation.

摘要:
The authors explore the relation among social demographic characteristics, occupational prestige, and anti‐Semitism in America. The National Opinion Research Center's General Social Survey (1986) data are used to assess Americans' attitudes toward Jews. The results suggest that respondents' age, gender, and educational level are important predictors of anti‐Jewish sentiment. The influence of age, however, contravenes previous research in that young Americans report themselves to be anti‐Semitic. Reanalysis of these same data, focusing on Americans' attitudes toward Israel, suggests that age is an important factor for explaining anti‐Zionism. Implications of these findings are di

摘要:
Cast in the form of a Socratic dialogue, the author argues that only a world‐State, oppressive at first, can now save mankind from self‐destruction. But not all men agree that their species should at all costs survive. If, therefore, a pro‐survival group is to gain the power to have its way, it must offer a vision of life under the proposed State so different and inspiring as to win a decisive number to its
