摘要:
AbstractThis paper deals with an overview of the ways in which language acquisition has been addressed over the last two decades from stimulus‐response (S‐R) to pragmatics and mother‐child action dialogues as early as the postpartum period. Observations reported from studies on how adults talk to children are discussed as well as a review of some studies both cross‐sectional and longitudinal on maternal speech to children which reveal meaningful statements about the relationship of maternal speech and the various states of the child's linguistic deve

摘要:
AbstractThis article is a position paper concerning the major issues in the study of children's acquistion of nonverbal behavior. In linguistic theory non‐verbal behavior may be considered irrelevant, it may be condsidered the precursor of verbal language, or it may be viewed as an integral part of human communication which is verbal and nonverbal. The author opts for the latter theory. Concerning the relationship between what is innate and what is learned, the paper discusses that nonverbal expression is innate, but culture determines its forms and its uses. The paper then presents a brief history of Developmental Kinesics, explaining its technical difficulties and its methodological complexities. It proceeds by documenting the function of maternal nonverbal behavior towards the neonate. Finally, the paper treats the levels of analysis. A distinction is drawn between communicative and non‐communicative nonverbal behavior. Its affective, emotional function relates to ego state; its regulatory function governs face‐to‐face interaction; and its referential, informative function pertains to the message proper. The child also acquires the non‐interactional aspects of body movements which distinguish different peoples. Expression and perception must be studied separately; and finally, nonverbal behavior has to be correlated with verbal behavior and particular attention has to be focused on the do

摘要:
AbstractThere is a challenge to develop an educational technology which promotes cognitive and linguistic competency among children of the poor. Researchers who have studied early interactions between mother and child and service deliverers who have implemented parenting programs recognize the link between cognitive and language development. The focus of this paper is a curriculum model which includes both areas of development. The interactive behaviors of mother and child during three successive stages of the child's development (0–9 months, 9–18 months, and 18–36 months) from the matrix of the cognitive‐linguistic interventio

摘要:
AbstractIn this report the history of cry studies will be reviewed and various phenomena associated with neonatal vocalization, including the processes of audition, respiration, phonation, and reflexive noisemaking are described. Some of the causes of crying are discussed, along with changes in the acoustical structure of cries as these relate to an infant's maturation. It may be concluded that crying has a powerful evocative effect generally. Cries also can arouse specific physiological responses (e.g., increased lactation) in mothers, and have a diagnostic value for the pediatrician. In the field of developmental linguistics, detailed analysis of crying, cooing, babbling, and other vocalizations of early life may shed light on the verbal and nonverbal aspects of speech, particularly as these grow out of the first few years of life. Rhythmic and musical elements of infant behavior seem to contribute to what has been called “postural conformity” in the infant‐mother relationship, undoubtedly an important ingredient in attachment behavior and in the emotional development of the i

摘要:
AbstractTwo different accounts of infant vocal development have recently been advanced. Both stress the lawful nature of this development and propose that it occurs in a series of stages. One account stresses the infant's attempt to make speech‐like sounds from the earliest months and proposes that characteristics of speech are successively brought under the infant's control. The other suggests that instead, processes of integration and coordination of aspects of vocalization are taking place and considers these processes in relation to the situational contexts of vocalizing. A more comprehensive view is proposed in which aspects of both accounts are incorporate

摘要:
AbstractNewborns exposed to a randomized sound battery containing speech‐like sounds demonstrated a variety of behavioral reactions reflecting individual differences in personality and organization. Subjects who actively searched the environment for stimuli and showed prolonged vigilance episodes scored in the 90th percentile on the Denver Developmental Test when evaluated at later ages. Subjects who were remarked as inhibiting crying during their exposure to the experimental schedule later were described by their parents as “good” babies, while subjects who vocalized their displeasure during exposure were described far less favorably. These findings may have implications for developmental studies of mother‐infant inter
