AbstractA theoretical framework for understanding child mistreatment is presented. A continuum approach is discussed which considers mistreatment to be the result of multiple interacting influences. Further, the reciprocal relationship between child abuse and other societal problems indicates that prevention of child abuse must be broadly based in order to be effective. It is noted that an ecological and developmental perspective needs to be taken to broaden current conceptualization of child mistreatment as well as to provide an impetus for change.

AbstractThe epigenetic and social network models of social development are discussed. The relative efficacy of the two approaches is put to empirical test by examining the relationship between inadequate attachment relationships and subsequent peer interaction. Infants in a day care center who either had or had not experienced maltreatment were observed with their mothers and with peers. AbstractChild abuse is most likely to occur when socially isolated parents react impulsively to aversive stimuli emitted by their children. Certain child signals and characteristics are aversive to adults. Infant cries are aversive to all parents, but children who are unusually irritable or whose cries are especially grating may become aversive to their parents even when they are not crying. Studies show that the cries of premature infants and the cries of babies incorrectly labelled premature are more aversive to parents, and that abusive mothers and the mothers of premature infants find cries more aversive than other mothers do. The incidence of abuse would be reduced by the availability of supportive social networks and the elimination of distorted parental expectations.

AbstractThis paper presents a case model for linkage of social service delivery programs with the prevention and detection of child abuse. The example of problem and problem linkage is given for the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT), the nation's largest preventive child health screening program designed to detect and treat early childhood medical and developmental conditions in indigent children. The screening activities combined with the efforts to educate parents as to the nature of normal child development suggests that the EPSDT program may be used to prevent the development of conditions that may lead to abuse as well as to identify children who have been abused.

AbstractChild maltreatment is conceptualized as a social welfare problem inevitably created by the isolation that individualistic culture creates.
