AbstractThe conceptual and methodological framework of an observational method designed to measure the interconnectedness between individual development and early relationships is presented. This model is based on our growing understanding of the intense participation of the baby in determining his or her own development. Research on the manifestations of initiatives, environmental responses, and interactive happenings (confrontations, negotiations, encounters) has yielded an instrument defined in several different ways. Twenty‐eight mother‐infant pairs are presented in this paper. Initiative is considered an important manifestation of the expression of the infant as a differentiated being. It is anticipated that the method presented in this paper will be adequate to measure the development of the infant's self in relationship to his or her environment. It is proposed that the progressive constitution of the self will depend upon an adequate resolution of the basic formulapreserving spontaneity/complianceduring development. Specific interactive phenomena including negotiation and occurrence of encounters will allow for the identification of particular features of each dyad. AbstractIn this project, sets of twins were assessed, treated with psychoanalytically oriented approaches, and followed in a research study. The basic hypothesis was that in identical twins, the variations of the quality of bonding between each of them and their parents and the differences in behavior are consequences of the parents' expectations, desires, fantasies, and fears about the multiple pregnancy and their personal history.In order to explore this hypothesis, the parents were interviewed once they knew that it was a multiple pregnancy. Subsequently, they were videotaped during delivery, breast‐feeding, bathing, face‐to‐face interactions, solid feeding, free play, and interaction with peers. These observations were discussed with the parents. The team was then presented with the outcome. AbstractThis paper describes the psychosocial characteristics of adolescent mothers living in poverty in urban communities of Uruguay, whose children are now 0 to 5 years old. A sample of 965 mothers representative of the poor urban communities in the entire country was studied. One hundred thirty‐six of these mothers were adolescents, 19 years old or younger. Six major areas were explored: socioeconomic status and social support, family characteristics, child‐rearing practices, maternal and paternal availability, and characteristics of the child. In the group of children 2 to 5 years of age, psychomotor development was explored using the Test de Desarrollo Psicomotor (TEPSI).Psychosocial risk and child development were compared for adolescent and nonadolescent poor urban mothers. Children in both groups showed negative effects. It was not found that children of adolescent mothers did worse than those of nonadolescent mothers. Therefore, it was concluded that adolescent maternity is a complex phenomenon that cannot be viewed in isolation from the social environment in which it takes place. AbstractThe affective behavior of medically high‐risk (HR) and low‐risk (LR) infants, along with a control group of full‐terms (FT), was compared at 6 months of age during a 5‐minute independent and a 5‐minute toy‐centered play session with their mothers. Because previous research has shown that joint toy play places a burden on the attentional capacities of HR infants, it was predicted that they would show less positive affect and more negative affect in toy‐centered (vs. independent) play and joint attention (vs. face‐to‐face) interactions than would the LR or FT infants. Results showed that the HR infants displayed fewer smiles across the independent and mother toy‐centered play condition and across face‐to‐face and joint attention interactions than LR or FT infants. AbstractThe article focuses on a multimodal strategy for the treatment of behavior problems commonly associated with toddlers. These problem behaviors, which include temper tantrums, bedtime and sleep difficulties, aggressiveness, not listening, and eating problems, are among the most often presented to mental health professionals who deal with this age group. The treatment approach, which combines clinically pertinent aspects of dynamic, behavioral, and family approaches, includes the following components: data collection (problem clarification, family‐of‐origin interviews, interactional sessions), formulation of hypotheses, introduction of a behaviorally oriented management program, tracking of problems inherent in the implementation and successful management of the behavioral program, and booster sessions. AbstractThree cases will be presented in which remote, accurate verbal and visual memories were present in, and from, toddlerhood for which the earliest age was 16 months. The age at which memories can be verbalized depends on the age of onset of speech phrases and cognitive ability. The memory may remain for over 30 years. Toddlers spontaneously report traumatic memories. The earlier the trauma occurs, the less the child is able to organize the material into a narrative form. The child is only able to relate the parts that are within his or her verbal repertoire and significant to him or her.

AbstractThis round table addresses the diagnosis and treatment of feeding disorders and failure to thrive. It describes a family‐centered approach by a multidisciplinary feeding disorders team, beginning with the screening evaluation by the team coordinator at intake, through the evaluations by various team members, the team meeting with the parents, the development of a treatment plan, to a 1‐year follow‐up after treatment. Both twins refused to eat textured food and were found to have a posttraumatic feeding disorder secondary to repeated gagging and choking on cereal and lumpy baby food. However, only one twin was engaged in a battle with the parents over eating and developed infantile anorexia associated with failure to thrive.
