AbstractPrevious research has found that mothers of preterm infants work harder in a face‐to‐face situation with their infants than mothers of term infants. Data have also revealed that preterm infants are less responsive than term infants in a social interaction. To date, there have been few studies that have attempted to determine the range of facial expressive cues that preterms may be emitting or the possible physiological basis for this behavior. In an attempt to investigate these questions, preterm and term infants were observed in a face‐to‐face situation. Prior to the session, three minutes of resting EKG was recorded. The infant's facial behavior was coded with a discrete facial action coding system. Maternal behavior was also coded. Measures of heart rate as well as short and long term variability were computed. Results revealed no differences in facial lability or in facial expressiveness between term and preterm infant. In addition, there were no differences in maternal behavior to either term or preterm. AbstractInfant and toddler home visiting programs constitute an important subgroup within the rapidly growing field of early intervention. Scores of such programs have been implemented by health, educational, and mental health agencies during the past decade. Recent reviews have reported on home‐based early intervention for specific populations, such as biologically impaired infants or infants from economically disadvantaged families. Other reviews have focused on the effects of home‐based early intervention in particular outcome domains, such as I.Q., or infant health. AbstractThe Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (BNBAS) was administered to 61 full‐term, healthy newborns between 7–10 days of age. Three groups of newborns made up the sample: 23 babies were born at planned home births to nonmedicated mothers, 22 were born in the hospital to nonmedicated mothers, and 16 neonates were born in the hospital to mothers who received obsteric medication. Analysis of variance indicated a significant F ratio on the BNBAS cluster for orienting behaviors; comparison of the BNBAS scores of the three groups revealed a significant difference on the BNBAS cluster for orienting behavior between the home‐born babies and infants born in the hospital to mothers who received obsteric medication. There was no significant difference between groups for medication or birth setting alone, suggesting these perinatal factors have a complex, perhaps synergistic effect on newborn beh
