摘要:
AbstractRebecca was a 21/2‐year‐old Caucasian female who was brought to the Infant Psychiatry Clinic by her 28‐year‐old widowed mother. Her mother's chief concern was around parenting issues as well as how to explain to Rebecca the death of her father. This loss occurred when Rebecca was 6 months old and was a source of great pain and unresolved grief to her mother. Central to this case was the chaotic history of Rebecca's mother, who was a victim of incest from the time she was 13 until she was 23 years old. Both of her parents struggled with chronic alcoholism during much of her childhood. It appeared that a factor precipitating the mother's request for help was her struggle to move out of her own mother's home. This outpatient Infant Clinic case involved two primary goals: (1) the assessment of the parent‐child relationship and (2) the development of confidence in this “good enough” mother. Vitally important to the process of treatment was the mother's modulation of timing and frequency of sessions. The issue of pacing was carefully monitored as this mother could have been overwhelmed by delving precipitously into her incestuous history. The use of a structured videotape interview to address mother‐child interaction and parenting issues was particularly helpful. Referral to an AlAnon group provided the mother with social support as she separated herself from her alcoholic mother and moved toward autonomy in her own

摘要:
AbstractIn this longitudinal study of mothers, their families, and their infants, both discriminant and regression analyses showed that prenatal reports of family dynamics predicted infant disposition at 8 months with considerable accuracy. The most important predictive component was organization and consistency within the family unit as well as the dependability of other family members. Possible mechanisms by which family dynamics might affect the infant's developing disposition are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThis article presents the theoretical basis, clinical model, and case illustrations of the Family Administered Neonatal Activities (FANA), a specialized application of the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (Brazelton, 1973), in which parents are guided in eliciting behaviors from their infant within the context of a specific clinical protocol that integrates the practices of short‐term, psychotherapeutic interviewing with principles of an empowerment model. The protocol is designed to elicit from parents their initial perceptions of their newborn and then to use the behavior of the baby as the vehicle through which parents can affirm or challenge their initial perceptions. Case examples illustrate the use of the FANA for three purposes: family support, intervention, and assessmen

摘要:
AbstractIn the present study, the effects of developmental intervention and parent‐infant interaction intervention on the social competence and emotional development of preterm infants were assessed. The results suggest that early home intervention focused on the infant's development facilitates social competence and adaptation, whereas intervention focused on the parent‐infant interaction resulted in greater emotional security on the part of the infant. Social competence during the second year of life was predicted by social competence at 8 months and emotional security at 12 and 16 months. These findings have implications for early identification of infants at risk of later socio‐emotional difficulties and intervention with dysfunctional mother‐infan

摘要:
AbstractTeenage parenting was investigated in different ethnic groups (Cuban and American Black), family constellations (single‐parent, nuclear, and extended families), and primary caregiving arrangements (mother versus other). One hundred sixty‐four infants born to a representative sample of teenage mothers were observed during interactions with their mothers and were given developmental assessments when they were 12, 18, and 24 months of age. Being a Cuban mother, living in a nuclear family, and being a secondary caregiver were each associated independently with stronger social support systems and more positive child‐rearing attitudes and mother‐infant play interactions. Despite these early advantages, maternal stimulation and infant performance decreased over the second year of life irrespective of ethnic group, family constellation, and caregiving arran

摘要:
AbstractThis article presents data from four independent studies on the relationship between quantity of maternal vocal stimulation during naturalistic conditions and 3‐month‐old infants' cognitive processing, as assessed by the infants' differential vocal responsiveness (DVR) to their mother versus a female stranger. In two of the studies, the subjects were full‐term American infants whose parents came from a wide socio‐educational and ethnic background. In the third study, the subjects were low‐risk preterm infants of White American parents. In the fourth study the subjects were full‐term infants in Greece. The results from all four studies showed a curvilinear relationship between DVR and maternal vocal stimulation during naturalistic conditions. High DVR was associated with a mid‐level amount of maternal vocal stimulation, whereas low DVR was associated with both least and most maternal vocal stimulation. These studies raise the question of possible adverse effects of social overstimulation on infan
