摘要:
AbstractThis article provides an overview of the Perinatal Positive Parenting program (PPP). This primary prevention program, developed at the Institute for Family and Child Study at Michigan State University, was designed to meet the parenting support and informational needs of first‐time parents. The basic tenets of the PPP program are discussed and overviews of the in‐hospital, at home, and parents' support group functions are provided. The evaluations of the primary demonstration of PPP are presented and the PPP videotapes and other materials developed for use with program participants are outli

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes the development of the volunteer component of the Perinatal Positive Parenting program—a program for parents of firstborns who deliver at the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Effective parenting volunteer service requires energy, interest, and an extraordinary commitment to healthy family relationships. Principles which assure a high level of commitment to the Perinatal Positive Parenting Program are discussed. Recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation dimensions which specifically support this commitment are also examine

摘要:
AbstractParent‐infant support groups offer first‐time parents an opportunity to share their experiences and concerns with each other. This paper discusses the parent groups component of Perinatal Positive Parenting, a program for parents who deliver their first‐born children at the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Formation of the support groups follows the program's hospital and in‐home components. Group organization, structure, and meeting format are described and the volunteer group leader's role as facilitator is e

摘要:
AbstractThe research reported here is an analysis of selected factors associated with the positive and negative perceptions of mothers toward their infants at one month. The data were collected as part of the larger evaluation of the Perinatal Positive Parenting program. In addition to the treatment or control status of the mother, age of mother, birth weight of the infant, one‐minute APGAR score, and opportunity for mother‐infant physical contact in the delivery room were included in the analyses. Significant differences were found for the APGAR score groups. A backward elimination regression technique found APGAR score, birth weight, and age of mother to be predictive of maternal percepti

摘要:
AbstractImportant insights into the nature of the Perinatal Positive Parenting program can be gained through case reviews by the volunteer parents regarding their experiences with the program. Some information about the impact of the program on the new parent involved can only be captured in this way. This is also true of the considerable positive impact the program has had on the volunteers themselves. In this article three of the Perinatal Positive Parenting program volunteers outline these dimensions in brief case reviews. Bibliographic vignettes of the three volunteers are also provided.

摘要:
AbstractLittle is known about what today's new parents believe about parenting. A team of seven researchers from six midwestern universities have initiated a longitudinal investigation of rural and urban parents' beliefs concerning ideal and actual parenting practices. This article describes the research and the development of the Inventory of Parenting Behavior, a Q‐Sort measure developed by the project team specifically for this stud

摘要:
AbstractMuch has been written about parenting practices from a theoretical perspective, but we know very little about what parents believe about parenting. This article begins with an overview of parenting theory, reviews briefly studies that have attempted to identify parenting characteristics, and provides a rationale for the use of the scaling techniques known as Q‐methodology for rank‐ordering statements of parenting behav
