摘要:
AbstractThe effects of Cesarean delivery on father‐infant and mother‐infant interaction were studied in a sample of 30 Swedish, two‐parent families with a full‐term healthy first‐born infant. Fifteen infants were delivered vaginally, and 15 infants were delivered under full anesthesia by Cesarean section. The infants and parents were observed at home when the infants were 3 and 8 months old. The findings indicate that mothers of infants delivered by Cesarean section reacted less positively when they saw their infants for the first time and encountered more difficulties breastfeeding than did mothers of vaginally delivered infants. At 3 months post‐partum, fathers of infants who were Cesarean‐delivered participated in a greater amount of caregiving activities. There were no differences between Cesarean and vaginally delivered mothers at 3 months after delivery. At 8 months, there were no differences between the two groups (Cesarean and vaginal) on either the interview questions or on‐any of the behavioral measures. Results from this study do not support reports from the USA of long‐lasting effects of Cesarean delivery on parent‐infant interaction. The results suggest the need to study cultural variations that surround Cesarean section delivery so as to understand in what way the subsequent parent‐infant relationship is inf

摘要:
AbstractThe psychodynamics of normal pregnancy include ambivalence, identification with the fetus as an outside object, as a part of self, and, finally, as a separate person. Positive and negative attributes can be projected upon the fetus. In infant‐centered maternal psychotherapy, the infant often serves as a transference object. Many disorders of attachment or disorders of early parenting have their origins or manifest themselves in the prenatal period. During prenatal psychotherapy, the fetus can serve as a transference object. Review of the literature reveals conflicting views with regard to the effectiveness of prenatal psychotherapy. The developmental crisis of pregnancy may lead the woman to resolution of underlying problems with early detection and intervention. Review of the literature reveals cases of disorders of attachment and disorders of early parenting starting prenatally related to the mother's difficulties with her own parents or siblings. Case studies of prenatal psychotherapy demonstrate the role that the fetus plays as a transference object in the mother's efforts to rework some conflict from her own infancy or childhoo

摘要:
AbstractThis research is based on a 4‐year longitudinal study of 51 normal, low SES infants and their mothers. It was conducted at the Clinical Infant Development Program sponsored by the Clinical Infant‐Child Development Research Center (NIMH‐HRSA). Infants' free‐play sessions with their mothers were analyzed at 4, 8, 12, 24, and 36 months of age by use of an observation method based on Feuerstein's theory of Mediated Learning Experience (MLE). The participating children were tested with the Bayley Scales (to age 2 years) and the McCarthy Scales (at 36 and 48 months). Ten‐minute observations of motherchild interactions, which used molar criteria of observation based on MLE theory, predicted cognitive performance at 2, 3, and 4 years of age. The observation made at 12 months was most predictive of long‐term cognitive performance. Mother‐infant interaction patterns were less predictive of cognitive performance in infancy than they were of performance at 2, 3, and 4 years of age. Each of the observed MLE criteria increased with age, although the frequency of some of the criteria remained low throughout the study. Stability of all MLE criteria was significant across most comparis

摘要:
AbstractThis paper discusses the Ford Foundation's Child Survival/Fair Start Initiative, under which Ford has sponsored community‐based strategies to improve pregnancy outcomes and infant health and development, through parent support, education, and service brokerage. We present an overview of the general Child Survival/Fair Start strategy and then examine in detail emerging lessons in two areas: The influence of specific patterns of family support needs on local program priorities and emphases and the nurturance and work of the lay home visitor

摘要:
AbstractThe influence of infant physical attractiveness and infant temperament on the mother‐infant relationship at 12 months of age was examined. Physical attractiveness of the infant was rated by 48 adults, and infant temperament was assessed by use of the Toddler Temperament Scale, which yields indices of activity level, rhythmicity, approach, adaptability, intensity, mood, persistence, distractibility, and threshold. Mother‐infant attachment was measured via the Strange Situation. Results showed that 46% of the variance in attachment classification was accounted for by five of the nine dimensions of temperament (withdrawal from new situations, high intensity of response, low distractibility, negative mood, and low threshold of response). Physical attractiveness and other dimensions of temperament did not add significant amounts of variance over and above that contributed by the first five dimensions to the prediction of attachm

摘要:
AbstractTemporal stability and convergent validity of infant temperament ratings and play interaction behaviors were examined across early to late infancy. Stability was noted for the temperament dimensions activity, rhythmicity, intensity, mood, and persistence. Stability also was noted for the infant play interaction behaviors looking, smiling, and vocalizing. In addition, convergent validity was noted for attentive‐affective behaviors and comparable temperament ratings; for example, gaze aversion and nondistractability, and distress brow behavior and negative mood. Generally easier temperament infants were noted to vocalize more and to cry less frequently during their play interaction

摘要:
AbstractThe clientele of our Infant Mental Health Service mainly consists of unwed teenage mothers and babies beset by medical, social, and psychological complications. Efforts to help these families usually extend beyond the caregiver‐infant dyad and may include working with grandmothers, pediatricians, and high‐risk neonatology nurses, as well as outside social agencies and foster homes. Thus, cooperation among various disciplines, departments, and agencies'is indispensible in infant mental health practice. Problems and successes in building and maintaining such cooperation, its impact on clinical practice, staff work, administrative functioning, and therapeutic strategies are discussed. Clinical examples illustrate the nature of the cooperat
