摘要:
AbstractThe relationship between mother‐infant interaction and interactive communication competence in high‐risk and developmentally‐delayed children is examined and an inter vention program that attempts to optimize mother‐infant interaction is described. Interaction patterns in populations with atypical infants are consistently found to be different from those in families with normally developing infants. The risk and delayed infants show fewer, less intense, and developmentally‐delayed social responses and their mothers compensate with more frequent and often intensive forms of social interaction. An intervention model is presented that (1) evaluates the mother on a hierarchy of interaction styles that range from low to high levels of sensitivity and (2) modifies interaction style through the use of easy‐to‐learn techniques with the goal of moving the mother to an optimal level in the defined hierarchy of so

摘要:
AbstractThe recent work on the maturation of the visual system of the infant in the first six months of life is reviewed. By correlating this externally observed prospective data with retrospective, subjective psychological data of severely regressed patients, a portrait is painted of the infant's mental representations at different developmental stages in the first half year of life. Spitz's genetic field theory of ego development is a theoretical framework for this biopsychological integration.

摘要:
AbstractA first hand narrative report is used to trace the emergence of a concept of death in a normal male child between the ages of 21 and 36 months. The pattern at age 36 months was congruent with findings already described in the literature. Detailed observations from earlier months had not previously been reported.

摘要:
AbstractThis article reports on some clinical applications in the 9 to 30 month age range of a new structured paradigm. The Infant Clinical Assessment Procedure (ICAP) is not a test, but an assessment technique. It is particularly aimed at the evaluation and ongoing monitoring of problems in the emotional development of infants. Its eight episodes represent a wide array of effective, social, and cognitive stimuli. The primary focus of these episodes is on the infant, with the exception of the mother‐infant task that specifically gauges the mother‐infant ralationship. It is suggested through case vignettes that the ICAP may be useful for the documentation of the efficacy of treatm

摘要:
AbstractA combined foster parent training and preschool education program for developmentally delayed and emotionally disturbed children is described. This program was organized and run by a multidisciplinary group of independent professionals, who served as a liaison with a foster care agency. The goals of preventing placement breakdown by giving early attention to problems, and of improving foster parents' abilities to manage difficult children were met at modest cost to the agency. The model can be replicated in other communities to improve the quality of foster care provided to young children.
