摘要:
AbstractAlthough research on fathers and infants increased dramatically during the past decade, it did so largely in a theoretical vacuum. Theories of development emphasize mother‐infant relationships, with little attention, if any, given to father‐infant relationships. As a result, studies of father‐infant interactions tend to replicate procedures that have been used in mother‐infant research. While useful, mimicking mother‐infant research paradigms may blind investigators to salient aspects of development that are unique to and critical for father‐infant relationships. In traditional families, study of mother‐father‐infant triadic interactions may reveal more useful information about the father's role in infant socialization, than the study of father‐infant dyadic interactions. However, the study of triadic interactions may yield little useful information about father‐infant interaction in the single parent family. Until a number of methodological issues are resolved, the literature on the father's role in the socialization of his infant must be int

摘要:
AbstractRecent research on mother‐infant interaction has provided little empirical support for the role of environmental factors in early sex‐role development. In this paper, considerable support for the father's role is presented. Specifically, the research on mother‐ and father‐infant interaction patterns is reviewed in order to describe developmental changes in the nature of differential treatment of the sexes during the first two years of life. Together, the studies reviewed highlight the importance of the father in early sex‐role socialization, delineate a developmental model of the early differential treatment of the sexes, and provide clues as to the origins of later childhood sex differences in verbal and visual‐spatia

摘要:
AbstractBoth fathers and mothers successfully engaged their infants one to six months of age in interactive games in a laboratory play situation. Both parents played almost one game per minute with their infants. Mother played more conventional limb movement games and more distal, visual, attention maintaining games while fathers played more proximal, arousing, idiosyncratic limb movement games with their infants. Interactive games with parents even during the first six months of infancy provide differential experiences for the infant. These games may have developmental significance in selectively facilitating the acquisition of social and cognitive skills.

摘要:
AbstractFathers' face‐to‐face interactions with their 4‐month‐old high‐risk infants were compared to mothers' interactions with the same infants and to those interactions of fathers and mothers of normal infants. The high‐risk infants were less attentive and less affectively responsive than normal infants, and their mothers were more active. Fathers of both high‐risk and normal infants engaged in more game playing and laughed more frequently than mothers during interactions. Although the behaviors of the normal and high‐risk infants differed, as did the behaviors of mothers interacting with them, the fathers engaged in similar amounts of activity, smiling, laughing and playing games with normal and high‐risk infants. Fathers may be less disturbed than mothers by their high‐risk infants'

摘要:
AbstractHome observations, ratings of interaction, and interviews were carried out in families with first‐born 5‐month‐old infants. Comparisons were made between two groups of families differing as to whether the childbirth had been a Cesarean or vaginal delivery. Fathers whose babies had been born by Cesarean delivery reported greater involvement in child care and were rated as more responsive to infant distress. Both mothers and fathers tended to show less animation in interactions with their infants following a Cesarean delivery: mothers engaged less frequently in vigorous physical stimulation and showed less reciprocal positive affect with their infants, and fathers smiled less at their in
