摘要:
AbstractRecent attention has focused on the role of father‐child interaction and relationships in child development. Usually neglected in such discussions, however, is the special group of fathers who are adolescent. For various reasons, children of adolescent fathers may receive less adequate parenting than children of adult fathers. Men who begin parenthood during adolescence frequently obtain less formal education, achieve less vocational success, and have higher divorce rates than peers who delay parenthood. Because of situational factors and, possibly, developmental factors, many young fathers may be faced with excessive amounts of stress with which they may have difficulty coping. These factors serve to interfere not only with father‐child interaction, but also with mother‐father relationships. Both relationships have an important influence on child develo

摘要:
AbstractStudies examining the effects of day care are reviewed. Little evidence was found indicating a negative impact on child development. A number of weaknesses in the day care literature were pointed out, including problems of ecological validity and failure to examine for differential effects. Suggestions for future research are made, among them a “natural history” of day care and studies of children who have experienced tra

摘要:
AbstractInfant psychotherapy, in which the mother is requested to follow the baby's activities without initiating or directing, is described. Mothers demonstrate different styles of involvement with their infants: a protective mode, a prohibitive mode, a competitive mode, and other ways of interfering with their infants' tendency to explore the environment. Attempts to analyze such factors as position, distance and movement are discussed. Research for recording and analyzing the movement of infant and mother dyads is proposed.

摘要:
AbstractAn integrated approach to providing preventative and clinical services to infants and their families has been developed in a mental health center. These infants have parents who are experiencing emotional problems. A description of the programs and three case histories illustrate the infant mental health techniques employed and the multidisciplinary team approach utilized at the center.

摘要:
AbstractThis article describes how the Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale might be used to assist parents in recognizing their infant's cues and capabilities. Infants to whom the scale as administered were high‐risk babies requiring care in an intensivecare unit. The scale can be a useful component of an educational program for parents of newborn

摘要:
AbstractWithin the context of family therapy focused on the behavioral problems of a six year old, several observations of inappropriate interactions between the parents and their infant concerned the therapist. In consultation with an infant specialist it was decided that the therapist would avoid identifying parent‐infant interactions as a further problem and would, instead, begin to model appropriate interactions during the on‐going therapy sessions. The infant, initially passive, began to respond to the therapist and gradually the parents became more appropriate in their interactions with their infant. It was concluded that the modeling process minimized the stress and eliminated the need to process feelings of anger and guilt often associated with professional identification of family probl

摘要:
AbstractThe relationships between marital adjustment, satisfaction with parenting and actual parental behavior were assessed for a sample of first‐time parents. Results indicated that there were consistent relationships between fathers' satisfaction scores and their own behaviors, but few relationships between mothers' behaviors and satisfaction scores. It was suggested that the determinants of the behavior of mothers and fathers may differ. In the absence of specific socialization of fathers into a caregiving role, fathers' caregiving style may become organized and develop primarily in the context of their relationships with their spouse

摘要:
AbstractFifty‐one mother‐infant pairs were screened at birth and at one month of age using theNeonatal Perception Inventories(NPI). This instrument identified 20 infants who were judged at high risk for the development of subsequent emotional disorder. Evaluation of the study group at 14–17 months of age, using theInfant Mental Health Profile, documented impairment in the areas of attachment, confidence and coping in 80–95% of those infants with high risk NPI ratings. The use of the NPI as a screening instrument in a primary care private pediatric setting is di
