AbstractSmiling as an index of cognitive mastery was examined in a study of seven infants clinically diagnosed as having Down's syndrome. The subjects were administered the Uzgiris‐Hunt scales of infant psychological development on five occasions over a four month period of time, and their smiling responses to their successful and unsuccessful completion of the items administered were coded. Two hypothesis derived from J. McVicker Hunt's theory of intrinsic motivation were tested: (a) sense of pleasure derived from successful solutions would be greater than to tasks not solved correctly, and (b) sense of pleasure to optimally challenging tasks would be greater than to tasks which could be solved easily. The findings provided support for the first but not the second prediction. AbstractA community supported child‐parent drop‐in program that provides services to families with few financial resources or to those who may not seek help from other service agencies is described. Services are provided free or at a minimal cost. The family oriented program provides short‐term, respite care for children from birth to kindergarten age, educational programs and social opportunities for parents, short‐term crisis counseling, referral to other community resources, and volunteer opportunities and training. Three centers are housed in facilities that donate the space. The centers recruit, train and actively involve parents, students, senior citizens and other volunteers to work in the program. Service groups and businesses aid in fund‐raising and human service agencies provide consultation, act as referral resources and help with program operation. Each center is individualized to meet the needs of the community

AbstractAn increasing problem that can have serious consequences for children, adults and social institutions is child custody after divorce. The risks associated with the various courses of action in child custody cases are discussed. Alternatives to the adversarial process are presented. The position of the legal system is explained and the importance of the involvement of mental health professionals is emphasized. Also discussed are the possible roles mental health professionals can assume on behalf of the child in working with the family and the legal system.

AbstractThis paper reviews an emerging literature arguing the importance of studies of spontaneous behavior occurring in natural settings. Naturalistic methods have a critical and complementary role along with experimentalmethods. The paractical problems in data collection and data organization that are speecific to the use of videorecording in spontaneous behavior settings are discussed.

AbstractThis paper deals with the mental health aspects of infant day care emphasizing that mental health input into the design, implementation and ongoing supervision/evaluation of the majority of day care programs is minimal at the present time. The author proposes the following three criteria by which the adequacy of mental health input in a day care program could be judged: 1) ongoing mental health consultation to the caregiver staff on a weekly basis and by the same clinician(s), 2) assignment of primary caregivers to the infants, 3) periodic naturalistic observations of the infants to be recorded and discussed by the caregivers. The author postulates that consultation to the caregiver staff of infant day care programs represents the opportunity to establish a new frontier of prevention. Therefore, the mental health profession should consider it a goal that every infant day care setting would have a mental health clinician as a consultant. The methods, preventive functions and manpower aspects of such consultation work is discussed.

AbstractThe Caldwell HOME Inventory is a 45‐item observation/interview procedure designed to assess the quality and quantity of support for development available to the infant in the home environment. Using the HOME, a longitudinal study of over 100 families from Little Rock, Arkansas has been conducted. A review of the longitudinal study is presented. The review shows substantial relation between HOME scores and children's mental test scores throughout the preschool years. Some sex and race differences in the relation were noted.
