摘要:
Abstract.A Management Information System relating to technical manpower resources has been developed at the Unilever Research, Port Sunlight, Laboratory over the past two years. Data concerning areas of technical expertise were obtained from the scientists themselves and collated in the form of an Experience inventory. Application of the Inventory in the fields of personnel development, personnel placement, expert location and manpower planning in general are discussed. Although based upon subjective data, it was concluded that the system was sufficiently robust to justify its use in these areas. Staff reactions to the concept were, on the whole, favourable and initial experience of its use has been encouraging. The system would therefore seem to provide a valuable aid in the vital area of human resource utilization.

摘要:
Abstract. A possible way to improve the accuracy of forecasts is to estimate (and subsequently remove) any systematic bias by reference to the bias found in similar forecasts in the past. This paper discusses the applicability to industrial R&D of a method proposed by Summers for debiasing estimates of the costs of military projects by means of a regression equation derived from past experience, and gives the results of applying a similar method to estimates of costs, sales, product prices, and return factors for ten industrial development projects.

摘要:
AbstractTechnology transfer involvesthe movement of new concepts, processes or products from one area of science or engineering technology to another. The nature of the literature dealing with technology transfer is described. Discursive or ‘wisdom’ literature predominates indicating a great concern with the problem by industry and government. There are some case studies that provide insights into various aspects of the process, but there are very few empirically based field studies. Apart from research on the diffusion of innovation and studies in other allied areas, little theory building with accompanying field tests of propositions has been done. It is now appropriate to begin such studies to obtain information that will provide a more sound basis for government policy and industry investment in

摘要:
Abstract. Some data from two studies is given and the input from university science to technology is found to be small. The transfer of an idea by the movement of a person is found to be more important than the transfer of ideas via the literature.

摘要:
Abstract. In the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, a series of screening experiments is often run on a class of compounds or mixtures of several classes of compounds. The data obtained from the screens can be utilized to assess the project progress and/or the best routes to take for further research. This problem is similar in many ways to that of project selection. In this paper a sequential method of calibrating individual projects is developed which is relevant both to project selection and assessing how best to deploy further effort in projects of the type described. This paper was delivered at the European Conference of Management of Research and Development and Technological Forecasting. Paris. October, 1970.

摘要:
Abstract. A Delphi study over the whole of the U.K. textile industry is at present being carried out by the Technical Economy Department of the Shirley Institute. This paper describes the methodology used and discusses some of the problems which have arisen and the results obtained.

摘要:
Abstract. This paper discusses the use of network analysis in the management of a large scale engineering project carried out within the R&D department of an engineering company. It describes the use of precedence diagrams and concludes that these are simpler to use than the more commonly encountered PERT nomenclature. This method has now been extended to cover other projects in the R&D department and it is concluded that their successful introduction has been encouraged by the interest and support of top management.

摘要:
Abstract. The series of conferences for scientists and technologists on 'Starting one's own Business' are part of a growing interest in this country in aiding the technical entrepreneur. What do such conferences offer their participants? What type of person attends them? and can we yet predict beforehand who is likely to become asuccessfultechnical entrepreneur? There follows a brief description of the first such conference and its participants.
