ABSTRACTThe histology, fine structure and histochemistry of the digestive gland of Lymnaea stagnalis was examined before and after treatment with a crude water extract of a powerful molluscicidal plant, Detarium microcarpum. The results obtained indicate that the molluscicidal extract induces necrosis in the digestive gland typified optically by cellular oedaema and nuclear pyknosis. At electron microscope level molluscicide treatment is seen to induce a major vacuolation and fragmentation of the cytoplasm. Lysosomal acid phosphatase and lysosomal integrity however is preserved. Histochemically, both acid and alkaline phosphatase appear to survive treatment very well. In treated tissues there is a shift of alkaline phosphatase from the brush border to the lumen. Molluscicide treatment results in a distinct inhibition of ATPase activity which appears to be a characteristic feature of induced cell death.

摘要:
ABSTRACTGlycolipid patterns have been studied during the first six days of Xenopus embryo development. Glycolipid contents showed a sharp increase more evident after the third day of development. Glucosylceramide and sulphatide are not only the most represented species, but also those which exhibit a statistically significant percentage change during early development. Among gangliosides, GD3 is the most represented specie. Two polysialylated gangliosides with not yet established structures are also present.

ABSTRACTHighly purified plasma membrane was prepared from etiolated zucchini hypocotyls, developing pea cotyledons and suspension‐cultured soybean cells by phase partitioning and sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The brain β‐adaptin monoclonal antibody B1/M6, which recognizes a similar adaptin in zucchini clathrin coated vesicles, cross‐reacted with an electrophoretically identical polypeptide in the plant plasma membrane fractions. Immunogold labelling of thin sections of soybean cells confirmed the presence of the β‐adaptin at the plasma membrane. ABSTRACTA mild whole body hyperthermic stress causes a rapid and reversible reduction of rat liver glucocorticoid receptor (GR) binding capacity and affects the stability of the GR‐DNA complexes formed after thermal transformation of the receptor. These changes appear to be physiologically relevant, since they are accompanied by a decrease in dexamethasone induction of hepatic tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT). ABSTRACTElectron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to study the effect of equinatoxin II (EqT II), a cytolytic protein isolated from the sea anemone Actinia equina L., on membrane fluidity and cell metabolism of V‐79 cells; the reduction of the spin probe incorporated into the cell membranes as well as the oxygen consumption in the cell suspension were measured. The results were compared with the results obtained by the cell viability study. Under the influence of EqT II (less than 37.5 μg/106cells) no significant changes in cell membrane fluidity were observed, while reduction kinetics of the spin probe and the oxygen consumption decreased when the cells were kept in Tris buffer solution. However, in the presence of 10% fetal calf serum, which prevented cell lysis, the effects of EqT II were diminished. The oxygen consumption corresponds to the cell viability changes but the reduction kinetics alterations indicate that some oxidation‐reduction processes other than cell respiration are affected by EqT II in the absence of serum. The effect seems to be indirect, probably due to the formation of pores which are associated with changed permeability of plasmalemma for metabolites and

摘要:
ABSTRACTAn in vitro model to examine the effects of filarial proteins on lung epithelial cells has been developed. Several of these proteins appear in circulation of infected individuals. A close association between tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) and filariasis has been reported by several workers. [3H]‐thymidine studies do indicate that when optimum concentration of these filarial proteins were added to lung cultures in proliferating and basal/maintenance media a further increase in growth stimulation was observed early in culture. However, on longer exposures and at higher concentrations an inhibitory effect with distinct morphological changes were noted. The dual role of these proteins on lung epithelial cells in vitro may highlight the possibility of a direct interaction of these proteins with lung cells during disease also contributing to tissue damag
