摘要:
AbstractCurrent literature concerning parents’involvement with their hospitalised children focuses on the issues of partnership and family-centred care. Relatively few studies address the dynamics of relationships, practice, and the associated issues of responsibility, status and power. Using participant observation within an interpretive framework, this study highlights an inherent paradox in the expectations and roles of parents, situated as visitors and partners in caring for their hospitalised child.

摘要:
AbstractThe application of the Total Quality Management (TQM) philosophy within the health care sector would enhance the development of nursing power, leadership and knowledge. TQM challenges conventional management techniques as it requires a participative management style in order to be effective. There are many potential benefits for nurses, when quality assurance monitoring within a hierarchical management structure, is replaced with a focus on continuous quality improvement by every member of staff. These benefits are described within the context of both organisational and personal commitment to Total Quality Management.

摘要:
AbstractThe changing composition of Australian society has resulted in the reality of a multicultural workplace. With this comes the need to examine issues related to cultural wellbeing within an occupational setting. Migrant women nurses from non-English speaking backgrounds participated in this phenomenological study, which examined their experiences working as nurses within the New South Wales health care system.Participants described traumatic experiences around entering the nursing work environment. Familiar and comfortable roles such as being a woman, a colleague and a nurse were altered and made uncomfortable by the imposition of disturbing and unfamiliar roles. This discomfort was compounded by what was experienced as an uncomfortable and perilous work environment. The task for these women became one of finding sanctuary and comfort and finally, of establishing a place for themselves. This paper will take the reader on the journey from being a stranger to finding a place and will raise issues for discussion surrounding culture and safety in the nursing workplace.

摘要:
AbstractThe process of action research is explored within a surgical ward of a public hospital. The process was conducted with the staff of the ward in the spirit of participation. The principles of action research and the action research spiral underpinned the process. The methodology utilised group meetings, individual interviews and questionnaires. Observations were recorded through journaling.Three major concerns were identified by the nurses and one, the admission process, is followed through the action research spiral showing the changes that occurred to practice. By the end of the study the nurses were able to recognise inconsistencies between what they said and what they did and recognised their ability to bring about change to practice.
