AbstractA constant-volum control technique for the operation of open-channel networks is proposed. Such a technique is based on the evaluation of stored water variations in each reach, relative to a uniform flow reference configuration, through water level masurements at the upper and lower end of each reach which set up the error signals for the feedback loops of the gates. The proposed chennel operation llows a significant reduction of the time delays typical of the usual open-chennel network operation.

AbstractThe planning parameters used at present in Egypt are either based on the limited information on electrified villages available at the beginning of the electrification project in the early seventies or based on data collected from similar projects in other countries.This paper deals with the development of a new set of parameters which can be used in the planning of village electrification schemes in Egypt. These parameters are necessary for an accurate a priori estimation of the cost of. and the material required for, any expansion or rehabilitation in the present rural distribution systems. They should also provide the necessary relations for any network optimization studies. The large amount of data accumulated since the beginning of the electrification scheme in Egypt in the early seventies is statistically analysed through step-wise multiple linear regression program.The present study allows - and for the first time - a careful examination of the patterns that have been evolved since the beginning of the rural electrification project in Egypt. By basing the analysis on a statistically representative sample - 94 villages - and by using regression technique instead of mere average, the results achieved represent a solid basis on which future planning and optimization studies can rely. A sample of these results is presented.

AbstractA mathematical analysis Is developed to Include the saturation In the small-perturbation equations of synchronous machines. The saturation in both the d-and q-axls has been considered. Using this model, the effect of saturation on both the synchronizing and damping torque coefficients (KSand KD) has been investigated for various loading conditions. The results have been verified by comparing them with those of an ai.alog computer simulation and with those of published work.

AbstractThe proposed method Is appropriate to handle large linear systems consisting of interconnected subsystems and having a high system order (100 ... 1000 e.g.). After decomposition into subsystems, these are simplified by an aggregation technique. At the same time a local feedback on a lower level can be included. The aggregate and possibly locally controlled subsystems are then recomposed to remove the decomposition. The most essential topic of this paper is the answer how to simplify the subsystems such that recomposing the simplified ones approximates the original system behaviour sufficiently well. The method has proved to be robust enough to apply it repeatedly. This has also been done with the application example of a metal strip processing line (system order 230) that will be presented in some detail in the second part of this paper.
