AbstractThe modelling of a tunnel kiln can lead to a set of partial differential equations (of hyperbolic type) whose solution (temperature of various constituents) is a function of space and time variables. The model which is obtained, is rather complex and, therefore, must be transformed if, for example, an optimization study of the kiln is needed.This paper shows how a linear lumped parameter system is obtained, by reducing the number of space variables and by using the collocation method applied on the linearized distributed parameter model.Numerical results concerning a simulation of a kiln used for firing roof-tiles, are given.

AbstractA method which generates multivariate normal data for exogenous inputs to a simulation model is used with linear regression procedures to estimate a model for calculating variable costs of irrigation. The resulting estimated model is used to calculate variable irrigation costs and analyze the impact that economic and technical variables have on irrigation costs.

AbstractA methodology is being developed to map hierarchical, modular discrete event models onto distributed simulator architectures. This paper reports concepts developed for the first stage of the methodology concerning model representation. The DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) [22] is extended to facilitate modular, hierarchical model specification. The formalism is capable of expressing multilevel models, i.e., models containing components at more than one level of description. Component communicates with each other via input/output relationships. Generic DEVS model components are derived to handle timing and delay, and collection/distribution of input/output events. The hierarchical decomposition and the use of DEVS generic components facilitate top down construction of the model. To show the expressive power of Extended DEVS in specifying systems, we specified the Alternating Bit Protocol using the formalism.

AbstractThe management of nuclear reactors requires the availability of simulation packages suitable for the accurate reproduction of the reactor behavior both in normal and emergency situations. Such programs are usually obtained by means of classical modelling techniques and are very accurate but require, on the other hand, large computation times. The purpose of this paper is to describe the application of the multivariable identification techniques described by Guidorzi (1975, 1981 ) to the primary sodium heat exchanger in the PEC fast breeder nuclear reactor to obtain a simple but still reliable model to be used in fast real-time simulations regarding both operators training and process control. The obtained results show that the considered heat exchanger can be described, with excellent accuracy, by means of a low-order linear dynamical model for variations up to 20% of its normal conditions.

AbstractThe paper deals with the problem of finding a control strategy for optimal design of a storm sewer system having a tree-type structure. The criterion for design decisions is the generation of a least cost system. Both of the dynamic programming (DP) and discrete differential dynamic programming (DDDP) techniques are evaluated and used as the optimization tool of the system to design its layout, manhole locations, and the diameter, slope, and crown elevations of each sewer in the system. The concepts of hydrograph routing, and risks and uncertainties in design are investigated and used as optimal system components. Different methods of hydrograph routing are reviewed, evaluated, and incorporated with the design's risks in the optimized system. These methods are applied to a real system and the results are compared and evaluated. A conclusion concering the optimal strategy in a storm sewer system design is reached.

AbstractIn this paper a discrete model of muscle Tibialis Anterior in isometric condition is given. The mathematical model is deduced by use of cha-racteristic response achieved by electrically stimulated muscles. The results obtained by computer simulation of the mathematical model were compared with experimental results and even for simple transfer function show satisfactory results.

AbstractEnergy Planning and Policy is characterised by some particular features. It is highly technical but also possesses a strong political element, it has economic implications and environmental repercussions and the impact of policies extends into the future constraining coming decisions. The assumptions commonly underlying energy plans and policies are restricting and affect the quality of the outcomes. In this paper a framework for energy planning and policy by the government is proposed; it gears long and short run considerations, reduces uncertainty through sequential decision making, and consultations, and improves the compatibility of energy plans and policies with non-energy objectives. Thus, the robustness, adaptability and the likelihood of full realisation of energy plans and policies increases.
