AbstractNew software with efficient utilization of the 8067/80287 math co-processor permits remarkably powerful control-system simulations on small personal computers (IBM PC/XT/AT and. compatibles). The new ENHANCED DESIRE package executes immediately without any noticeable delay for program compilation. A powerful interpreter calls a small, efficient compiler, which translates only the critical time-history operations and is, therefore, very fast. Execution speed approximately matches that of FORTRAN-ba- sed CSSLs, and the new runtime library is faster than FORTRAN. Precompiled integration routines with double-precision integral accumulation minimize roundoff errors. ENHANCED DESIRE can solve up to lOO differential equations and performs multi-run statistical and optimization studies. The package also handles complex-variable arithmetic, matrlx/vector calculations, and fast Fourier transforms, and includes 16- color graphics and many convenience features, such as built-in screen editing and an automatic notebook file. Examples shown include a satellite attitude controller, a sampled-data control system, iterative optimization, frequency-response calculation, and matrix differential equations.

AbstractA computer simulation model has been developed for a water-to-water heat pump. The simulation model is intended to evaluate the thermal performance of this water-to-water heat pump system. It can also be used as a computer-aided design analysis tool since it has many built-in design options. The modeling techniques used and the different types of operational modes and component options relevant to shipboard environment are presented.

AbstractAs two rough surfaces approach each other, the in surface asperities begin to contact at a discrete number of points. The real contact area increases as the applied load increases. The degree of contact, which is a strong function of the number of nature of surface asperities, has a significant influence on the heat conduction behavior across the contacting gap and on the carrying capacity of a lubricated bearing.This paper presents a stochastic modelling and a finite element formulation in which effects due to the interference of asperities are included in the form of a truncated normal probability density function. The conventional heat conduction equation and the Reynold's equation of lubrication are modified. The work introduces the finite element method into the realm of stochastic processes, and may help to simulate and resolve such problems as gap heat conduction and film lubrication, where discrete microscopic effects cannot be ignored and where using each finite element as a continuum fails.Although this paper is limited to gap heat conduction and thin film lubrication, the same concept can be readily generalized to other field problems, such as fluid-fluid interfaces, solid-fluid interaction, etc.

AbstractThe authors define the conditions to replace some generators connected to an infinite bus through a transformer and a line, by an equivalent generator which will have the same behaviour. The choosen criterion will be : a same transient operation during small load plan modifications for all considered synchronous machines. This needs to modify the regulation parameters and to control the active and reactive powers of each generator. The method is applied for a three machine power system.

AbstractThe discrimination between four types of upper limb movements, namely: flexion, extension, pronation, and supination, from the EMG patterns of surface electrodes located at the biceps and triceps of the upper arm is treated. To discriminate between these limb movements, four different models are utilized to assess their potential for achieving high discrimination rate. The four models are: autoregressive (AR), integrated autoregressive (IAR), integrated autoregressive derived from an overdetermined set of equations, and finally an integrated autoregres-% sive that emphasizes the lower frequency part of the EMG, spectrum. The AR approach does not produce stable model in several cases which indicates the inadequency of this approach for EMG signal due to its nonstationary characteristic. The other models yield stable systems and the parameters of their models are utilized to discriminate between the aforementioned movanents using linear discriminant function approach. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the success rates of each of those models in recognizing the movement function performed.

AbstractDuring the last years an analysis procedure and a general purpose computation program have been presented; they allow to determine the steady-state behaviour of any electrical or electromechanical system including static converters with short computing time and good accuracy.The present paper provides an extension of the analysis procedure, which also allows to evaluate the stability of the steady-state solution. In literature, this problem is already developed in relation to some particular conversion systems; on the contrary this paper shows a generalized formulation suitable for any conversion system.
