摘要:
AbstractThe detection of targets with a radar system is inherently a nonlinear stochastic process. Thus the application of nonlinear estimation becomes inevitable. This paper is concerned with two approaches to nonlinear estimation:an approach employing a Gaussian second-order filter (GSF) and another employing an iterative filter (IF). The accuracy of estimates obtained via such filters are compared and shown to be superior to that obtained via the extended kalman filter (EKF). Moreover, the idea of switching models has been extended to the former and results in a new scheme called variable dimension GSF (VDGSF). This latter technique is shown to yield substantially better performance. The simulation results presented validate the performance predictions of the proposed algorithm.

AbstractJob scheduling is a crucial factor affecting the performance of a distributed computer system (DCS). For effective utilization of the resources of a DCS, it is important that no processors remain idle at any time. A job may be run locally or on a remote processor, as decided by the job-scheduling policy. A jobscheduling algorithm may be either source initiated or server initiated. It has been shown that server-initiated algorithms generally outperform source-initiated algorithms. This paper proposes a simple dynamic and decentralized server-initiated job scheduling algorithm, that minimizes the unnecessary movement of jobs from processor to processor. The performance of this algorithm has been studied by a simulation experiment.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper proposes a new Ethernet topology, together with a communication protocol suitable for short-packet environments. The performance of the proposed scheme lias been investigated by modeling the network and the protocol in LANSF. Empirical results show that our solution improves the performance of CSMA/CD in situations when packets are substantially shorter than the round-trip propagation delay of the bus.

AbstractComputer-based tools are used extensively for dynamic system modelling, but often they are stand-alone software packages incapable of communicating with each other. It is desirable that all the tools required by a modeller be integrated within the framework of a software environment which forms part of an overall environment for dynamic system design. Early attempts to create these environments in the control engineering field were not commercially viable, and it is proposed that this problem is overcome by adopting an Open Systems approach. This requires that the software packages which comprise an environment must conform to appropriate international standards. To facilitate the identification and development of these standards a reference model is required, and the success of Open Systems Interconnection suggests that a service-oriented reference model is most appropriate for this purpose. A suitable reference model for computer- assisted software engineering environments is identified, a derivation of this model is proposed for dynamic system design environments, and the services provided in this model are described. Migration towards the Open Systems goal will need to be driven by both users and suppliers, and will require a transition period. Ii is concluded that this approach will create a free market in which users have genuine choices of frameworks and tools from a range of vendors.

摘要:
AbstractFIDME-PC was developed to aid forest managers to evaluate arid screen out investment alternatives with relative ease and great precision. Up to four investment alternatives may be compared using any one of the four economic criteria: 1) cost effectiveness, 2) benefit-cost ratio, 3) present net worth, and 4) internal rate of return. The input estimates for the model may be expressed in the form of either point of subjective probability estimates. Simulated results will provide the probability that one investment might differ from others. Therefore, the forest manager will be able to choose, with a known degree of confidence, between investment alternatives. Model applications are demonstrated by examples.

AbstractA simplified mathematical model is developed to study the dynamic behavior of an electro-pneumatic proportional valve for pressure control. The valve is capable of supplying a pressure that can reproduce an electrical signal (electrical current intensity).In addition to parameters and independent variables, every differential equation constituting the model contains a coefficient which includes several geometrical parameters and some parameters related to flow through the valve. This coefficient may be determined by comparing results from experiments and simulated tests. The application of this method has given simulation-derived results that sufficiently approximate the experimental results of practical applications.

AbstractAssignment of machines to locations to minimize work-in- process (WIP) backtrack travel distance is one of the special cases of general quadratic assignment problems (QAP). The need is to assign N machines to N available sites so that the total WIP backtrack cost is minimized. Even though the literature on QAP is packed with procedures that venture to find an optimal solution that minimizes the total distance travelled, as of now, very few researchers have addressed the backtrack travel distance. Existing methods are realistically unsolvable for large value of N. This paper is a modification of an existing model that was based on a cut approach. The corresponding mathematical model is derived, and an efficient heuristic procedure for assigning machines to sites on a linear track by minimizing the total backtrack travel distance is presented. Results showing the performance of the heuristic is illustrated. In most of the test problems the heuristic produced optimal solutions.

AbstractThis paper discusses the identification of a special kind of nonlinear systems: bilinear systems. A new formulation of discrete bilinear systems is developed, and an improved recursive identification algorithm for these systems is presented. A theorem proving the convergence of the algorithm is established. Results of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
